  1. Psychology: the study of the human mind. So God created man in his own image, in the image of god he created him: male and female he created them Gen. 1:27

  2. Which one is true? Psychological Monism: The belief that human beings are made of only one substance Naturalistic monism: the belief that the human mind is just physical, like the rest of the body. Transcendental monism: The belief that the human mind is just spiritual, like the rest of the body.

  3. Is the human mind the same thing as the human brain?

  4. “Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground(physical) and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life” (spiritual) Psychological dualism: belief that the human mind is not the same thing as the human brain. Mind Brain

  5. Is it possible to prove the mind is both physical and non-physical? Minding your brain Unity of identity Ideas: cannot be weighed or measured We can study impulse s and measure them but not thoughts Pink elephant Rocks: cannot be false or morally wrong but what we think about them can be. You are the same person you were as a toddler-same you. Our identity is not tied to our physical bodies but rather resides in our spiritual selves

  6. continued Remembering Free to choose Our personalities are not things that we can see, hear, taste, touch or smell. No precise relationship between memory and the nerve cells in which it is supposed to be encoded. If thoughts are only effects of physical causes than our thoughs and mental choices are illusions Balls on a pool table One physical incident starts the process rolling and our actions are simply the end result. My synapsis made me do it! Rock thrown p most obey the laws of physics and continues traveling until something tops it.. It cannot choose to change direction . If we believe naturalism t is true, we have no good reason to choose to believe it. Personal choice would not occur with just a material mind.

  7. If we are not free to choose we are not responsible for our __________ If humans are basically physical machines, then sin is just a mechanical failure. Without the ability to choose, humans are not responsible for their actions. If we are more than mechanism then our failures must be judged as something worse then the breakdown of a machine. Reality of human sin leads us to the reality of human responsibility.

  8. Christian psychology deals with the total you Both Body and soul The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the spirit is life and please: the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. …You , however are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the spirit, if the spirit of God live in you. Rome 8:5-9
