  1. We all want what is best for our dogs and are willing to do what it takes to keep our dogs happy and healthy. We know it’s important to feed them a healthy diet, to exercise regularly and take them to the vet. We also want our dogs to have good behavior, but many do not understand how to train their dog or feel that it may be too late to get them on the right path to good behavior. It’s best to start training your dog early on if you are getting them as a puppy. It can be a daunting task (kind of like trying to train a newborn or younger baby). It takes a lot of patience and encouragement to continue with training at this age but staying consistent will be worth it in the long run. There are several methods of training your dog, but whatever method you choose the most important thing to remember is that you have to stay consistent and not change it up too much or else the dog may not respond well to the training (unless you are not having any luck with your method). Most dog trainers and vets would agree that using positive reinforcement will produce the best results. Praise them when they do well by giving them a treat or a nice pet. As electrolytes for dogs mentioned before, training your dog is like training your child (well maybe your toddler). They only have so much of an attention span and learn through consistency and repetition. Make sure you are spending time with your dog several times a day, giving them the attention that they need to learn new skills. When you are teaching your child to say “please” and “thank you”, it only takes a few seconds to demonstrate this proper behavior and is the key teaching them proper manners. Same thing goes with your dog – if you want them to “sit” before getting a treat, then you must do this repeatedly until it is a learned behavior. Again, patience and consistency will most certainly lead to success. You also need to make sure you have the proper leash for your dog. There are a variety of leashes to choose from and it would be smart to consult with a trainer or a vet to make sure you have chosen the right one. Having a proper leash for your dog will not only help with training your dog but will ensure his or her safety. A popular method for training your dog is with clicker training. This small hand-held device makes a clicking noise that helps reinforce positive behavior. The trick with this is to make sure that you click it while the dog is demonstrating good behavior and then immediately give them a treat. Timing is critical with this method in the beginning because the dog’s attention span will associate the treat with the current behavior. Whatever what it is you choose to train you dog, just remember consistency, positive reinforcement and safety are critical to your success.
