  1. Lassiter High School Reaching Excellence and Climbing Higher Math Department 2011-2012 • COURSE TITLE: Advanced Mathematical Decision Making Part 1 (AMDM) • INSTRUCTOR: Walter Cotter • EMAIL: walter.cotter@cobbk12.org • PHONE #: (404)218-9265

  2. COURSE DESCRIPTION: • This is a course designed to follow the completion of Mathematics 3 or Accelerated Mathematics 2. • The course will give students further experiences with statistical information and summaries, methods of designing and conducting statistical studies, an opportunity to analyze various voting processes, modeling of data, basic financial decisions, and use network models for making informed decisions. • Prerequisite: Successful completion of Mathematics 3 or Accelerated Mathematics 2

  3. SUPPLY LIST: • You will need all of the following: • One three-ring binder that is at least 1 ½ inches wide. • Mechanical or Number 2 pencils to be used for all tests and graphs. • A ruler or straight edge, a pad of graph paper. • A scientific calculator for the EOCT: recommend TI 30 XS Multiview • Recommend: A graphing calculator Texas-Instrument Nspire, TI-84 or TI-83

  4. GRADING POLICY: 50% Major Assessments 25% Minor Assessments 10% Cumulative Assessments (Dec/May) 15% EOCT 0% Formative Assessments

  5. Major Assessments: • Major Assessments will consist mostly but not exclusively of tests and some culminating tasks. • Test days for the Math Department are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays

  6. Minor Assessments: • Minor Assessments consist of homework, graded classwork, labs, activities, projects, grade sheet, and quizzes. • Homework assignments are due at the beginning of class the next day. Occasionally homework will be checked for accuracy. • All graphs must be on graph paper. If you are absent, refer to your assignment calendar, as you will need to make up every assignment you missed. • An assignment calendar will be posted on my blog page http://lhsblogs.typepad.com/cotter/

  7. Cumulative Assessments: • There will be two (2) cumulative assessments in December and May which cover that particular semester. • These assessments will be given during finals week.

  8. Formative Assessments: • These assessments DO NOT impact the grade. • These will consist of pre-tests, progress checks, and some homework checks.

  9. CALCULATORS: • Instruction in this course will incorporate basic scientific calculator skills. • The State will not allow the use of graphing calculators on the benchmark tests nor the EOCT in the spring. • The state does allow the use of the TI 30 XS Multiview. This is why we require each student to have this particular calculator. • Occasionally we will use a graphing calculator for exploration. If you have a graphing calculator, you may use it on any class work, homework, or tasks. Graphing calculators are allowed on national tests (SAT, ACT).

  10. ATTENDANCE AND MAKE-UP POLICY: • A student who is present and actively participates is more likely to be successful; however, if a student is absent, he/she has one day for each day of excused absence to make up the work. (For example, a student absent 2 days would have 2 days to make-up the work.) • Students are responsible for asking the teacher for the make-up work. A student with an unexcused absence may ask for assignments and may choose to complete them in order to keep up with the class; however, the teacher is under no obligation to grade the work. • Make-ups tests are done before school on Tuesday 7:15 to 8:15 or Thursday after school 3:30 to 4:25 in room 214. • Students who are in ISS when a test is scheduled are expected to make the test up during a Math Department make-up session.

  11. LATE WORK POLICY: • Some assignments can be turned in late. In all cases, there will be a penalty of 10% to 20% depending on the assignment.

  12. TARDY POLICY: • To avoid being counted tardy, students must be seated and ready for class when the bell rings. • If you are tardy for any reason, you must check in on the LAS in PPO or the administrative office by the cafeteria.

  13. EXTRA HELP: • Help is offered most mornings at 7:30 am and afternoons at 3:35 pm. • This is intended for those students who are working hard in class and attempting to do homework. • If you will let me know in advance of your intention to come in, I can warn you about meetings or conferences that might conflict.

  14. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: • Cheating is considered a serious matter. The parents of a student who has been involved in cheating will be notified and the student will receive a grade of zero for the test or evaluation period, and a grade of U in conduct. • For this course, cheating is defined as, but is not limited to, the following acts: • Copying anyone’s answers to questions, exercises, study guides, tasks, classwork or homework assignments. • Taking any information verbatim from any source, including the Internet, without giving proper credit to the author, or rearranging the order of words and/or changing some words as written by the author and claiming the work as his or her own, i.e., plagiarism. • Looking onto another student’s paper during a test or quiz. • Having available any study notes or other test aids during a test or quiz without the teacher's permission. • Collaborating on assignments when independent work is expected. • If a CELL PHONE is visible during any test and/or quiz, the student will be given a zero for that test or quiz.

  15. SYLLABUS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Please CHECK in the blanks to the left indicating your agreement to the following: _____I have read and understand the academic integrity policy. _____I have reviewed the class syllabus and understand the grading policy. _____I am willing to be contacted by e-mail. _____I have access to the Internet and will access the Pinnacle to check on my child's progress. I understand that teachers will make every effort to post grades within 2 weeks of grading the test, but that posting of grades, larger papers, and projects may extend beyond the two-week timeframe. _____I am willing to check the teacher’s blog at http://lhsblogs.typepad.com/cotter/ for the latest assignment sheets, standards being taught, testing dates, and other schedule updates.
