  1. Creating the Future of Business April 2001

  2. SAP’s Business Information Warehouse (SAP-BW), is at the core of the iAnalytics framework and a major enabler of the value proposition for transactional (ERP, CRM, SCM, HRM) systems

  3. What is iAnalytics? iAnalytics, or Integrated Analytics, is an environment within an organization that supports -- in a timely fashion -- the distribution and analysis of relevant information across the entire value chain to positively impact stakeholders’ decisions.

  4. Why Now? iAnalytics - Value Proposition What’s Different? What’s the Value? • Delivering role-based business intelligence • Linking strategy with performance measures and cascades these measures and analysis throughout the enterprise • Integrating a company’s informational assets across the value chain • Integrating advanced technologies and analytical methods • Embedding analytics • Strategic business intelligence across the enterprise. • Advanced analytical applications to deliver actionable solutions to complex business problems. • Optimized investments in information technology and elimination of redundant processes. • Simplified information landscape- presenting focused views to internal & external stakeholders- converting information into action into value. • Increased agility and responsiveness to the changing business environment to maximize operational & financial performance. • Over ten years ago, the ERP/back-office transaction systems constituted the first wave of large-scale IT investment. • Next were Y2K initiatives, paralleled by Data Warehousing and CRM/front-office applications. • Analytics is the next wave of significant investment focused on unleashing the value contained within past investments in ERP, DW, and CRM, based upon: • maturing business needs • advanced technologies • focus on integration The Offerings • iAnalytics Diagnostic • Business Case Development • Information Strategy Development • Governance Design and Implementation • Architectural Blueprints • iAnalytics Application Delivery

  6. iAnalytics and SAP’s New Dimension Products DATA SOURCES DATA MANAGEMENT ANALYTICAL FACILITIES INTEGRATION SERVICES • Structured Data • Through SAP’s R/3 product offerings all data sources are integrated. • In addition, SAP’s Strategic Initiative offerings: CRM, APO, HRM, SEM and Enterprise Buyer (EBP) are all integrated with the underlying R/3 data model. • Data Quality • Referential/data integrity is built into the R/3 data model • SAP-BW provides pre-defined extractors for R/3 transactional data, integration with SAP’s Strategic Initiative Offerings and open BAPIs for non R/3 data. • Additional data transformation logic and business rules can be defined for BW. • SAP-BW provides an integrated Data Mart solution with integrated Technical Meta Data (including an ODS and staging area) . • SAP-BW supports OLAP (inc. closed loop decision making) and reporting for R/3, non R/3 and SAP’s Strategic Initiative offerings: CRM, APO, HRM, SEM and EBP through the BEX Analyzer and Browser. • The SEM offering supports (role-based via mySAP.com): • Dynamic simulation/Scenario analysis (Powersim) • Static planning • Resource Allocation • ABM (OROS) • Balanced Scorecard • Financial Analytics • VBM • Performance Management • Management Cockpit • Reporting • Drill down capability • Ad-Hoc reporting • -What-if capability • Consolidation • Stakeholder Management • Unstructured Data • Through the BIC module within the SEM product, unstructured information (web-based and otherwise), can be automatically imported into the Business Warehouse. • Through SAP’s Knowledge Warehouse. • Routing Controls • SAP provides workflow capability • Event based alerts routing through SAP-BW Message Queue • Portal technology is supported through mySAP.com (Workplace and SAP Portals offering) • Event based alerts routing through SAP-BW • Client server based architecture • Standard browser access ACCESS VEHICLES • PDA, WEB, eMail INFORMATION CHANNELS

  7. Is SAP BW right for your Enterprise?

  8. When does it make sense to use an ERP sponsored DW solution? • The majority of the data is to be sourced from the ERP application • No other vendor knows the ERP system better than the ERP vendor (Data dictionary, schema, application logic, etc.) • Target application is well defined and based on one or more ERP modules • Pre-delivered extract programs, data models, reports, etc. • Closed Loop Decision Support is required. • Drill down functionality back through to originating document. 9. “If 80% or more of your source data is handled by your ERP, then an ERP-centric approach for your data warehousing is appropriate.” Source: Meta Group

  10. InfoSource Extractor Do you currently have R/3 installed in your Enterprise? • SAP BW can significantly reduce your data warehouse effort through: • Delivered Business Content • Pre-delivered extractors, objects, data structures, roles, etc. Activity Groups/ Roles Workbook Query Individualization InfoCube Mapping rules Customer Order Amount InfoObject Standardization Source: SAP

  11. Do you currently have R/3 installed in your Enterprise? • SAP BW can significantly reduce your data warehouse effort through: • Meta-data model integrated with R/3 • BW is based on SAP Basis Technology which enables shared Infrastructure Resources with R/3 • “Drag & Drop” query builder Source: SAP

  12. Interactive menu to drill down Interactive axis to set a filter Interactive legend to set a filter Do you currently have R/3 installed in your Enterprise? • SAP BW can significantly reduce your data warehouse effort through: • Powerful OLAP tool embedded in “Standard” Microsoft Excel 97 • Dynamic drill downs to other BW queries and R/3 reports • Use of complex variables, graphing, etc. • Ad-hoc slicing and dicing of data • Drilling of unbalanced hierarchies Source: SAP

  13. Do you currently have R/3 installed in your Enterprise? • SAP BW can significantly reduce your data warehouse effort through: • Reduced integration effort with certified 3rd party tools (through BAPIs) • Non-R/3 data extraction - Acta, ETI, Informatica, Mercatur, … • Presentation Layer - Cognos, inSight, Business Objects, Brio, ... • Integration of formatted and flat reports • Open data transfer • Exchange meta data via XML • Transfer data using XML format or import from Internet using http • DBConnect - supports meta data and data upload from external systems

  14. R/3 SAP BW Do you currently have R/3 installed in your Enterprise? • SAP BW can enhance the value of your current R/3 implementation by: • Significantly reducing the custom report development & maintenance costs • Providing a ‘Single point of entry’ for reporting • Flexibility in reporting • User friendly interface • Improve transactional system performance by ‘off-loading’ unnecessary query burden • Retain multi-year historical data for trending analysis Source: SAP

  15. CRM SEM Legacy APO HR EBP R/3 Are you considering other SAP New Dimension Products? • SAP BW is at the core of SAP’s Strategic Initiatives: Workplace Marketplace SAP BW SAP BW AppServer Source: SAP

  16. What are your Decision Support Technical requirements? SAP BW 3.0 • Evolution of SAP BW • Closed-loop analytical • applications • Open standard in heterogenous environments • Platform for e-business • solutions • Integration of formatted and flat reports • Integration with mySAP AppServer • Restricted Key Figures used in Calculated Key Figures • Variable Editor inside Query Builder SAP BW 2.0 • Web & Portal Integration • Mobile devices • Operational Data Store • Business Content for • B2B, CRM, SCM, … • Multi-Cube query • GIS & Web reporting • Robust security functionality SAP BW 1.2 • End-to-End Solution • Pre-defined Business Content • OLAP Analysis 2000 2001 1998/99 Source: SAP

  17. What is your Enterprise Reporting Strategy? • Where is operational reporting being done? What modules/data are you storing in R/3 e.g. Plan data? Is BW strategic, operational, both? • The ODS and standard pre-delivered content allows SAP BW to be positioned to support an Operational Reporting Strategy by off-loading operational and analytical reporting from R/3. • Development cycles and costs are generally less in SAP BW than using custom ABAP in R/3.

  18. What is your Data Scope? • Depending on your data scope, SAP BW may not be the best fit for your Enterprise: • Standard business content is available for data from CRM, SCM, EBP, HR, SEM, among others. • SAP is developing standard content to address the needs of specific industries, such as consumer/industrial products, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, and oil and gas. • Standard business content may not provide/capture all available data. • Data extracted may not be at the proper level of granularity required for your reporting requirements.

  19. What is your degree of R/3 customization? • Depending on what and how much customization has gone into your R/3 implementation, SAP BW may not be the best fit for your Enterprise: • SAP BW is tightly integrated with SAP R/3 principally through the standard data extractors. • Level of R/3 customization may impact the ability to take full advantage of standard data extractors.

  20. Do you have an investment in an existing ETL or Reporting tool? • BAPI Technology (Business Application Programming Interface) allows certified ETL and presentation tool vendors to access the BW data structures • Current certified vendors include: • ETL (Acta Technology, Ardent Software, ETI, Hummingbird, Infomatica, Information Builders, Prism Solutions, systemfabrik, TSI International, and WRQ Software) • Presentation (Arcplan Information Services, Brio Technology, Business Objects, Cognos, MIS Technologies, mSE Management, Seagate Software, Ton Beller, and Viador) • These tools may not be as ‘full function’ against an SAP BW environment as in their more native environments

  21. What is the timing of your R/3 implementation or upgrade? There are certain benefits and drawbacks to implementing SAP BW in parallel.

  22. What are the benefits of a parallel implementation of BW and R/3?
