Step 1: Problem/Purpose • What are we trying to figure out? • Why do we need this information? • Demo: How does weight on the outside affect how fast someone can spin? • Many sports such as gymnastics and diving require athletes to contort their bodies into spinning shapes. How can they spin faster to perform the tricks they need to do?

  9. Step 2: Hypothesis • What do you think will happen? • Why do you think that? • Demo: If the spinning person is holding weights, he can spin _______ after retracting his arms. • Why do you think so? • Momentum?

  10. Step 3: Materials • What items and materials do you need? • How much of each material? • Demo: 1 spinning disk, 2 volunteers, 2 weights

Step 4: Procedure • How are we going to test our problem? • Step by step, detailed, clear • Demo • Select two student volunteers • Have one student spin on the disk with his arms out. • After a few rotations, have student withdraw his arms • Observe change in speed • Have same student spin on the disk with his arms out while holding weights in each hand. • Repeat steps 3 and 4. • Repeat steps 2 through 6 with second student.

  12. Step 5: Results • What did your experiment show? • Demo: • After retracting arms, the spinning person spins faster. • With weights, the increase in speed is greater.

  13. Step 6: Conclusion • What have we determined from this data? • How does it compare to our hypothesis? • Demo: Angular momentum is the reason for these results! • What’s that? We’ll explain! • Did our results match our hypothesis?

  14. Step 7: Future Works • What new questions and problems does your experiment bring-up? • Demo: • How does the size or weight of the spinning person affect the speed? • Would more weight further increase the change in speed? • How do different body positions affect the spinning speed?
