  1. AUSTRALIAN ROTARY HEALTH

  2. RESEARCH FOCUS • Australian scientists have made many outstanding contributions to health research. Successful cures or preventative therapies have improved or saved many lives locally and overseas. • Concerned Rotarians, believing that worthwhile research should not be funded on an ad-hoc manner, put forward the concept of a permanent Rotary fund to offer research grants on a reliable basis. • This led to the establishment of Australian Rotary Health.

  3. ONE MAN’S DREAM It began in 1981 when Ian Scott from the Rotary Club of Mornington, Victoria, proposed the establishment of a charitable fund, and to raise a minimum of $2 million for research into cot deaths. Supporting healthier minds, bodies and communities through research, awareness and education

  4. RESEARCH FOCUS • Since 2000, Australian Rotary Health has directed the bulk of its funding towards mental health research. • Approx. 25% of Australians will experience some form of mental illness in any given year. • Almost half of the Australian population will experience a mental health issue at some point during their life.

  5. RESEARCH FOCUS • Almost 2/3 of people with a mental health illness do not receive treatment in a 12 month period. • Estimates indicate that up to 75% of people presenting with alcohol and drug problems also have mental health problems. • 85% of homeless people have been found to have a mental health illness. • By 2020, depression alone will constitute one of the largest problems worldwide.
