    3. Learning What is Learning?

    4. Learning What is Learning? “A relatively permanent change in an organism’s behavior due to experience.” Myers, p 309

    5. Classical Conditioning

    6. Classical Conditioning A type of learning in which an organism comes to associate stimuli. A neutral stimulus that signals an unconditioned stimulus begins to produce a response that anticipates and prepares for the unconditioned stimulus. Myers, p 312

    7. Classical Conditioning Unconditioned stimulus—something that naturally and automatically triggers a response.

    8. Classical Conditioning Unconditioned stimulus—something that naturally and automatically triggers a response. Unconditioned response—naturally occurring response to the unconditioned stimulus.

    9. Classical Conditioning Conditioned stimulus—an originally irrelevant stimulus that, after association with an unconditioned stimulus, comes to trigger a conditioned response.

    10. Classical Conditioning Conditioned stimulus—an originally irrelevant stimulus that, after association with an unconditioned stimulus, comes to trigger a conditioned response. Conditioned response—the learned response to a previously neutral stimulus.

    11. Classical Conditioning A normally neutral stimulus is paired with a naturally occurring stimulus response pair.

    12. Classical Conditioning A normally neutral stimulus is paired with a naturally occurring stimulus response pair. After a while, the normally neutral stimulus will cause the response even when the normal stimulus is not present!

    13. Classical Conditioning A normally neutral stimulus is paired with a naturally occurring stimulus response pair. After a while, the normally neutral stimulus will cause the response even when the normal stimulus is not present! (How weird is that!)

    14. Classical Conditioning Other things to know:

    15. Classical Conditioning Other things to know: Acquisition

    16. Classical Conditioning Other things to know: Acquisition Extinction

    17. Classical Conditioning Other things to know: Acquisition Extinction Spontaneous recovery

    18. Classical Conditioning Generalization

    19. Classical Conditioning Generalization—the tendency for stimuli similar to the conditioned stimulus to elicit similar responses.

    20. Classical Conditioning Discrimination

    21. Classical Conditioning Discrimination—the learned ability to distinguish between a conditioned stimulus and other stimuli that do not signal an unconditioned stimulus.

    22. Classical Conditioning So what?

    23. Break! Hurry back! There’s lots more to come!
