  1. Warm Up • Create an acrostic poem using your name and include adjectives that describe your personality. B – brilliant E – energetic C – cheerful C – clever A - ambitious

  2. Understanding Characterization Mrs. West

  3. Characters do things. • They feel things. • They hear things. • They say things. • They think things. • They go places. • They can walk, run, leap, and jump. They may sit and rock in a rocking chair or they may score the winning touchdown at a football game. • But the important thing is that characters act.

  4. Characters • When we talk about a character, we often describe that character by using terms called character traits.

  5. Character Traits • Character traits are descriptive adjectives like “happy” or “sad” that tell us the specific qualities of a character. • They’re the same kinds of words that we might use to describe ourselves or others, but we’re using them to describe fictional characters in a story we’ve read.

  6. Check out these examples of character traits:  A – active, adventurous, affectionate, ambitious, B – bad, bold, bossy, brainy, brave, brilliant C – careful, charming, childish, clever, clumsy

  7. Now it’s your turn! • Make an alphabetical list (A-Z) of as many character traits as you can! • Can you find any for the letter ‘X’?

  8. Activity • Now, pick three of the character traits you listed and use them to create your own character. • Write a descriptive paragraph about your character describing what the character does to reveal those personality traits. • For example, if you character is messy you might describe how they hate cleaning their room.

  9. Warm Up:Think of a character from an A.R. book you read this marking period.List 5 character traits that describe the character.

  10. Today’s LEQ: How does an author use characterization to show, rather than tell, readers about characters? RevealingCharacterization Mrs. West SLIDE 1

  11. Defining Characterization • Characterization is the process by which the author reveals the personality of a character. SLIDE 2

  12. Characterization is revealed through direct characterization and indirect characterization. Characterization Indirect Direct SLIDE 3

  13. Direct Characterization • Direct Characterization tells the audience what the personality of the character is. • Example: “The patient boy and quiet girl were both well mannered and did not disobey their mother.” • Why is this direct characterization? SLIDE 4

  14. Indirect Characterization • Indirect Characterization shows things that reveal the personality of a character. • There are five different methods that authors use to reveal indirect characterization. SLIDE 5
