Quiz/Bell Ringer • Please clear your desk for a brief quiz on chapter 5 of Things Fall Apart. • You have 5 minutes to complete it after it is passed out. • When you are done with the quiz turn it over and I will be around to collect it. • During this time I will give you the bell ringer to complete.

Objective • English: • Today I will be able to develop an understanding of subject-verb agreements in a variety of sentences. • Reading: • Today I will be able to understand the meaning and purpose of theme and then close read excerpts from Things Fall Apart chapter 5 and find details that support the chapter theme. • Homework: • Read chapter 6 from the electronic text posted on the web site. • Brief quiz tomorrow.

Theme • Themes are: • Themes are the fundamental and often universal ideas explored in a literary work. • The message the author wants to portray to the reader. • Examples of Themes: • Theme: Love as a cause of violence • Quotation: “If all else fail, myself have power to die.” • Explanation: Juliet said this whens she was feeling distraught over the struggle between her love for Romeo and her family’s disdain for the Montegues. It is by death, that Romeo and Juliet feel they will find freedom to love one another.
