  1. In this lesson, students will be able to identify effects of the fall of Rome as well as the rise of Charlemagne and the Franks. Students will be able to identify and/or define the following terms: Effects of the Fall of Rome Franks Charlemagne Pope Holy Roman Empire

  2. The Rise of the Franks Middle Ages 500 -1500 A.D. Ch. 8/9 Blue Book

  3. After the break-up of the Roman Empire. Western ½ of the Roman Empire became isolated from Eastern Byzantine and Islam.

  4. What is was like… • Hundreds of Germanic tribes took over Roman lands. • Germans were considered barbarians = foreigner. • Some tribes = Goths (Viso and Ostro), Saxons, Vandals, Lombards, and Franks. • Franks most outstanding. Built own Empire.

  5. Warfare increased. Trade decreased. The “Dark Ages” began.

  6. Franks • “Fierce” Franks came into Gaul and conquered. Called France today after the “Franks”. • The King, Clovis, formed a relationship with the Pope.

  7. Pope needed King’s army protection and to help spread Christianity • King needed Pope to encourage people to obey him.

  8. Franks • After Clovis infighting occurred. • Mayors of the Palace (advisors) got power. • Mayor Charles Martel became ruler. • Pope asked Martel to stop the spread of Islam into Europe (already in Spain). • Martel fought the Muslims, called Battle of Tours, and defeated the Muslims driving most out of Europe.

  9. Martel wanted something in return… • Martel’s son, Pepin, became King with help of Pope. • Pepin then gave land near city of Rome to Pope and agreed to protect him. Called Papal States. • Land gave PopePOLITICAL power as well a RELIGIOUS power over people.

Charlemagne • Pepin’s son, Charlemagne , conquered all other tribes in Europe and united it as one Empire. • He was crowned Emperor by Pope Leo III. • Pope claimed the right to say who ruled! • The new empire was called Holy Roman Empire = combo of politics (laws) and religion (Christianity).

  11. The Holy Roman Empire Pope and Charlemagne – together…Christianity spread

  12. During his reign, Charlemagne tried to recreate the Roman Empire, constant war. However, after his death, the empire declined… too be continued….
