Longer-term Market drivers • need to process multi-platform, heterogeneous information flows cost-effectively: professional ‘knowledge workers’ spend average 8 hours per week processing external information (2001 U.S. Survey) • need to process information from real-time, real-world sources (e.g. from sensors, cameras, GIS) • need to integrate better I&K in complex work processes (e.g. Rolls-Royce design software) • need to exploit better existing data and information resources, e.g. computer-aided discovery, innovation engineering

  5. Towards a knowledge-based economy? • EU Lisbon Summit calls for k-based economy • Europe is well positioned in content production, linguistic and cultural diversity ... but risks to lag in I&K processing systems. More automation, more autonomy is needed at content level • Several areas at stake: • digital interactive media (TV, radio, PDA-based) • I&K services provision (B-Band Web, ‘Web-plus-mobile’, etc.) • e-business, work processes, innovation • e-learning, culture etc.

FP6 focus • …"Knowledge technologies and digital content: The objective is to provide automated solutions for creating and organising virtual knowledge spaces (e.g. collective memories) so as to stimulate radically new content and media services and applications. Work will address: • technologies to support the process of acquiring and modelling, representing and visualising, interpreting and sharing knowledge. These functions will be integrated in new semantic-based and context-aware systems including cognitive and agent-based tools. • extensible knowledge resources and ontologies so as to facilitate service interoperability and enable next-generation Semantic-web applications”. • Extract from FP6 proposed Council Decision 2002-2006 Knowledge is broader and deeper than information. It refers to the human understandingof information, e.g. to compare it, draw consequences for decisions and actions, make connections with other bits of information, get value judgements and comments from other people.

Focus on upstream, generic, longer-term RTD, with exemplary applications in business, education, culture and general interest areas

Who may be involved KT combines different branches of computer science, media and database technologies, computational linguistics, A.I. and cognitive systems, etc. • growing research at national level e.g. A.K.T. eScience/GRID, IT 2006, Know-Centre, INRIA, FhG, plus many academic centres. • large ICT and software houses, plus highly innovative new knowledge integrator companies. • content & media players, broadcast houses and archives plus sectoral industries and bodies which act as leaders. • fora e.g. W3C-Semantic Web, MPEG, ERCIM, and EU-sponsored e.g. OntoWeb, DELOS, KM Forum. • END USERS: are mainly in the Web, e-services, e-business, scientific & cultural communities. • USA: DARPA, NSF, MIT, IBM, Microsoft clearly engaged.

Where is the knowledge we have lost in information? … Where is the information we have lost in data? ….. And where is the data we have lost in the Internet?
