  3. The Trojan War began when a prince of Troy eloped with the wife of a Greek king. The woman's name was Helen and she became infamous as Helen of Troy. "Hers was the face that launched a thousand ships," according to the poet Shelley, because all the kings of Greece rallied to get her back. Sailing to Troy, they besieged the city for nine years. Homer's other epic, The Iliad, concerns this siege and the many individual battles that were fought between heroes on both sides. It also chronicles the involvement of the supreme gods, who descended from Mount Olympus to take sides in the contest.

  4. EPIC POEM Whatever happened at Troy, the events were probably so captivating, that the Greeks continued to tell the stories. The history of the war was preserved from mouth to mouth, from person to person.

  5. So what is the story about? • After the ten-year Trojan War, the brave Greek warriors set sail for home.  Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his men incur the wrath of the sea god,  Poseidon, when they injure his son, the Cyclops, a terrible one-eyed monster. Courageous and wily, Odysseus overcomes many obstacles before at last returning to his homeland ten years later.  Meanwhile, in Ithaca, when Odysseus had not returned after the war, a number of men declared themselves suitors to the fair Penelope.  Odysseus's son, Telemachus, tries in vain to control the men who feast and loiter in his father's house. With the help of the goddess Athene, Odysseus, Telemachus and their faithful servants slay the wicked suitors. Reunited with his beloved family and reinstated as king,Odysseus lives out his days in peace and prosperity
