  3. ETI Base Code 1. Employment is freely chosen 2. Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining 3. Working conditions are safe and hygienic 4. Child labour shall not be used

  4. ETI Base Code Cont‘d 5. Living wages are paid 6. Working hours are not excessive 7. No discrimination is practised 8. Regular employment is provided 9. No harsh or inhuman treatment

ETI members • 36 Corporate members with a combined turnover in excess of US$180 billion in textiles, clothing, homewares, food and electronics • 3 international trade unions with collective membership of over 158 million workers in 152 countries • 15 non-governmental organistions such as Save the Children, OXFAM, CAFOD

  6. Why is ETI relevant now? • Globalisation • Rapid change and development • Company and brand reputations • Corporate social responsibility

  7. Why China? All countries have problems in this area, but • China is already a major world economy • China is still a poor country
