  1. Maps, Tools and Services at NASA GES DISC for Supporting Global Drought Monitoring Activities Zhong Liu, Steven Kempler, and William Teng NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center ( GES DISC)

  2. Outline • Overview of capabilities • Examples • Summary and future plans

  3. Capabilities at GES DISC • Near-real-time rainfall products and archives • Global and regional monitoring maps (rainfall accumulation, anomaly and normalized anomaly) updated daily • Historical TRMM data for case studies via Mirador (DISC: the official archive of TRMM data) • Goddard Giovanni (easy to use and without data and software downloading) for analysis of near-real-time and history events • Operational environment

  4. Products • Experimental Near-real-time TRMM Multi-Satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA-RT) 3-hourly (0.25 deg, 50° S – 50° N), daily, 10-day • Research quality TMPA (3-hourly, daily, 10-day) • Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS): land surface parameters • Modern Era Retrospective-analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA)

  5. Global and Regional Monitoring Maps • 3-hour, 24-hour, 10-day, 30-day, 60-day, and 90-day • Global and regional (16 maps) • Accumulated rainfall, anomaly and normalized anomaly

  6. Giovanni System • TRMM Online Visualization and Analysis System (TOVAS) • Other instances (e.g., Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS), Modern Era Retrospective-Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA), etc.)

  7. TOVAS

  8. Summary • GES DISC: Operational environment to provide data services for global drought monitoring and historical event research • Maps: quick evaluation of current conditions • Tools: customized and interactive visualization, analysis and data downloading • Multi-sensor, multi-source data integration capability • New service development and integration capability

  9. Future Plans • Integration of drought related data products (NRT, historical, e.g., NDVI, soil moisture, model data, etc.). A one-stop shop for drought monitoring and research for users around the world. A relationship between NWS and local TV meteorologists?

  10. Future Plans (cont.) • Customized services (maps, plots, and real data). Many sites don’t provide data and customized data and visualization services.
