  1. Common Brain Injury FAQs

  2. Untreated brain injury can have serious consequences, such as irreversible physical changes, brain damage, abnormal mood swings, and more. Also, severe brain injury can worsen over time and cause death in extreme cases. Fortunately, you should be compensated if you or a loved one suffers a brain injury because of the negligence of another person. Most people in such situations call a Bakersfield brain injury attorney who helps them initiate the recovery process by filing legal action against the faulting party. Traumatic Brain Injury FAQs 1. What is Traumatic Brain Injury––TBI? A traumatic brain injury (TBI) results from sudden impact or excessive force on the head. The sudden impact can result from a jolt, bump, blow, or strike to the head. Also, TBIs can result from penetrating injuries caused by sharp objects. The effects of a TBI can either be mild, moderate, or serious, which may sometimes be unrecoverable. Survivors of TBI victims typically experience coma, psychological or physical symptoms, or fatalities if the injury is severe (beyond treatment).

  3. 2. What are the Causes of Traumatic Brain Injury? The most common causes of non-penetrative TBIs include: • Falling accidents among seniors; • Car accident; • Hard strikes on the head with a blunt object, • Child abuse, particularly in toddlers; • Minor explosive blasts, and more. On the other hand, common causes of penetrative TBIs include: • Shrapnel or a bullet strike; • A strike to the head with a knife, or any other sharp object; • An excess force that breaks a bone and penetrates the head; • Serious explosive blasts, and more.

  4. 3. What are the Symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injury? The common symptoms of traumatic brain injury can include: • Bad taste in the mouth; • Behavior problems; • Blurred vision and mild seizures/convulsions; • Low concentration, or low attention span; • Insomnia, confusion, and, dizziness; • Headaches lightheadedness, and migraine; • Increased agitation and restlessness; • Poor coordination and decreased impulse; • Mood swings; • Mobility challenges; • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) • Repeated nausea and vomiting • Slurred speech • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)

  5. 4. What is a CTA? Computed Tomography Angiographic (CTA) is a medical procedure that helps brain doctors identify vascular lesions in the brain that are common after a severe brain injury that causes bleeding. This procedure (CTA) involves injecting a certain dye–– intravenously through an IV tube, in the hand or arm. The dye then lights the internal structure of the hand and helps the medical technician identify blood vessels in crucial body organs, such as the kidneys, heart, lungs, brain, and others. The Computed Tomography Angiographic (CTA) technology is commonly used to diagnose aneurysms––enlarged blood vessels that are about to rupture, atherosclerosis––fatty substances in arterial walls, damaged blood vessels, blood clots, and tumors. 5. What is Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)? Acquired brain injury (ABI) typically results from a heavy blow to the head, accident impact, or sports-related injuries. A traumatic impact can cause a significant change in neuronal activity and thus, affecting the nervous system, metabolic activity, and physical integrity.

  6. Acquired brain injury can be traumatic or non-traumatic, where traumatic brain injuries are common in assault cases, falling, sports injuries, and auto accidents. On the other hand, non-traumatic brain injuries are common in an aneurysm, near-drowning events, strokes, tumors, heart ailments, and others. What is Hypoxia Anoxic Brain Injury? Hypoxic, and anoxic brain injuries result from oxygen deprivation to the brain. In other words, hypoxia when the oxygen supply in the brain is restricted and this may impair the brain cells and cause brain tissue death––slowly but surely. Anoxia typically occurs approximately after four minutes of oxygen deprivation, causing brain cell death. How is Traumatic Brain Injury Diagnosed? Brain injury is subjective and can be difficult to diagnose–meaning that only a competent brain specialist can accurately diagnose a traumatic brain injury and recommend appropriate medical care. Diagnosing a traumatic brain injury involves:

  7. • Identifying the symptoms associated with TBI; • Performing a neurological examination; • Evaluating the condition of the brain through Imaging either using magnetic resonance imaging, CT scan, or x- rays, • Performing a Neuropsychological test to identify any brain function issues/problems. What Type of Brain Injury Causes Memory Loss? Mild concussions can cause temporal unconsciousness and memory loss but on the other hand, severe memory loss can be caused by moderate or severe brain trauma, damaging the portions of the brain that controls memory and learning. A traumatic brain injury typically affects short-term memory function and not long-term memory function. That said, you’ll notice that traumatic brain injury victims struggle with prospective memory, such as remembering essential events, chores, or the recent activities that they typically enjoy. Research shows that chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) causes forgetfulness and that the condition arises from repeated brain injuries. A brain injury can be life-altering and can even cause death in extreme cases and that’s why you or a loved one should be compensated for a brain injury resulting from the negligence of another party.
