  1. Varicose Veins: Underlying Causes and Methods of Treatment

  2. Have you ever felt throbbing or cramping in your legs? Or notice large veins appearing on the surface of your skin that develops over time? Did you ever feel like you don’t want to move around because your legs feel awful and heavy? You might be having varicose veins and this is something you should not take lightly. Varicose Veins Varicose veins appear when valves in the veins fail to work properly. As a result, large, swollen veins appear on your legs and feet. Over time, a varicose vein may rupture, which may result in more severe conditions. Veins rarely require treatment. However, when there is discomfort as well as swelling and pain, various treatment options are available.

  3. Types of Varicose Veins Trunk Varicose. These are often long and unpleasant veins that appear near the surface of the skin. Reticular Varicose Veins. These are red veins that group together, often appearing as a network. Telangiectasia Varicose Veins. More commonly known as spider veins, these appear in small clusters of blue and red veins. They often manifest on the legs and/or face.

  4. Common Symptoms Skin Discoloration Rash Restless, throbbing feeling on the legs Mild swelling of your ankles and feet Large veins that are visible on the skin surface Itch on the lower leg and ankle If you feel you have a combination of these symptoms, look for a vein doctor within the greater Chicago area immediately. When left alone, some symptoms may become worse

  5. Who are Prone to Varicose Veins? Women are more prone to varicose veins than men. Cases of varicose veins also get worse with age. These are attributable to a number of reasons, including hormonal changes and added pressure on the abdomen during pregnancy. Main Causes of Varicose Veins Varicose veins are mainly caused by increases in vein pressure. It is important to know what conditions contribute to this increase to understand how to prevent this from occurring. These pressure inducers include: Pregnancy Obesity Excessive standing Chronic constipation (rare cases) Inactivity Smoking Contraceptive pills or hormone replacement

  6. Treating Varicose Veins There are specific treatments for varicose veins depending on various factors. These factors include age, medical history, the extent of the condition, and the overall state of health. When you feel you have any of the symptoms stated above, do contact your Chicago vein doctor immediately. Vein Stripping. This is a surgical procedure done under general or local anesthetic to “strip” the varicose vein. Microphlebectomy. Special tools are inserted through small incisions to remove varicose veins. The procedure is done with or without vein stripping. Sclerotherapy. Varicose veins are injected with a saline or chemical solution. The solution shrinks the vein and prevents flow through it and forces blood to reroute through healthier veins. Thermal ablation. Radiofrequency energy or lasers are used to deliver heat and destroy the varicose vein wall.

  7. There are also effective home remedies that can be used to alleviate symptoms of varicose veins. These include: Compression stockings. Compression stockings can be effective if they are worn every day as the elastic stockings squeeze the veins and prevent blood from pooling. Leg elevation. Enable blood circulation by occasionally flexing your legs and elevating them above your heart a few times a day for 15 minutes. Elevating the legs relieves varicose vein symptoms. It also reduces swelling for mild to moderate cases.

  8. Prevention Varicose veins are rarely fatal on their own. While symptoms could worsen over time, it can still be prevented. Self-awareness plays a large role in that part. Here are some ways you can prevent developing varicose veins: Know the state of your health and conditioning. Avoid wearing overly tight clothing. Avoid crossing your legs Elevate your legs while you’re sitting. Exercise regularly. Again, if you notice any symptoms of varicose veins, do not hesitate to visit your Chicago varicose vein clinic to understand what treatment options you can take.
