  2. Andy Warhol • August 6, 1928- February 22, 1987 (aged 58) • Andy Warhol, was an American painter, printmaker, and filmmaker who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art.

  3. Andy Warhol and Pop Art • As a child, Warhol caught St. Vitus' disease, which damaged his nerves and left him with a permanently odd appearance. • His mother nursed him back to health with Campbell's condensed soup. He was later to use paintings of the soup tins he loved in his first major exhibition.

  4. The cartons are non-functional. Some are made from wooden boxes. • They comment on the way that commercial packaging transforms a mundane, household product into a glamorous, desirable commodity. • Warhol also focuses our attention on the significance of these objects as representatives of the impersonal, commercialized consumer society in which we live.

  5. Keith Haring • born on May 4, 1958 - died on February 16, 1990 • Haring was determined to devote his career to creating a truly public art. • In 1980, Haring found a highly effective medium that allowed him to communicate with the wider audience he desired.

  6. Throughout his career, Haring devoted much of his time to public works, which often carried social messages. • He was highly sought after to participate in collaborative projects ,and worked with artists and performers as diverse as Madonna, Grace Jones, Bill T. Jones, William Burroughs, Timothy Leary, Jenny Holzer, Yoko Ono and Andy Warhol.

  9. Printing History • Printmaking originated in China after paper was invented (about A.D. 105) • It flourished in Europe in the 15th Century. • Early Buddhists used text and images printed on paper to disseminate religious ideas via the sutra or, text.

  10. Medieval Christians used the printed image to spread their religion across the continent. • he first European books were printed from woodblocks in Germany in the mid-15th century.

  11. The intaglio print, a process utilizing a metal plate, first developed among goldsmiths and engravers, but was soon put to use to print images of saints, moral tales and tarot and playing cards!

  12. In Japan, Printmaking developed through contact with China. By the early 18th century, Japanese • printmakers were developing methods of color printing.
