  1. Computerized Geoinformation System of the Komi Republic Syktyvkar, 2004

  2. Main goals of the Computerized Geoinformation System Computerized Geoinformation System is “software, hardware and systematic information environment containing integrated description of natural resources, ecological situation, economical situation within Komi Republic boundaries” Goals of the Computerized Geoinformation System are determined by the Order of the Head of the Komi Republic dated July 26, 2002 #105 “About the Computerized Geoinformation System of the Komi Republic”. • Provision of Government agencies, local authorities, organizations of the Komi Republic with up-to-date information necessary for economic activity • Gathering, approval, processing and rendering information (also via common-used communication nets) • Development of interdepartmental information cooperation • Installation of informational and geoinformation systems in ministries and other executing agencies

  3. Computerized Geoinformation System as information interaction Agencies Themes Federal Central Directorate of Natural Resources and Environment Protection of the Russian Federation Ministry of Natural Resources in the Komi Republic Geology and mineral resource management KOMI REPUBLIC GIS CENTRE Land Survey Committee in the Komi Republic Use of forest resources Department for Hydrometeorology and Environment Protection Water resource management Fishery Committee in the Komi Republic Environmental protection Hunting Resource Management Department Biological resource management Etc. Republican Civil protection and emergency situations Ministry of Natural Resource and Environment Protection Population health Ministry of architecture, construction, municipal economy and energy City construction resources Ministry of economic development Maps etc

  4. Today’s the Computerized Geoinformation System is: Involvement of republican and federal ministries and agencies in information interchange within the System More than 200 information resources equal to 40 gigabytes Digital maps, space images, reports and analytical materials, applications Komi Republic GIS Centre, involved in gathering and processing of the geoinformation data Equipped with modern hardware and software Web site Allowing to obtain information on the Computerized Geoinformation System and availability of information resources More than 250 inquires for information annually By republican and federal ministries, agencies, enterprises and organizations

  5. Established in 1995 by Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Protection of the Komi Republic 40 employees Hardware: PCs, large scale printers, plotters, scanners Special software: ArcGIS, MapInfo, MapEdit, ERDAS Imagine etc. Russian Mapping Authority license and Federal Security Service License Komi Republic GIS Centre Mission: creation and development of the Computerized Geoinformation System of the Komi Republic • Activities: • creating and maintaining data bases and data banks of information resources • Providing republican and federal ministries and agencies, enterprisers and organizations by information • Research • preparing of State Report on Environment Situation in the Komi Republic • maintaining of computerized information system on natural protected territories • maintaining of computerized system of mineral resource management • development of integrated state monitoring system in the Komi Republic • international project implementation • etc.

  6. Information resources – basis of computerized geoinformation cadastre system Environmental protection • Boundaries of natural protected territories • Data on protection regimes General maps and remote sensing data Forest resources and forest management Geology and mineral resource management • Data on use of forest resources • Forest management plans and forest descriptions • Data on road infrastructure • Data on First group forests Map scales 1:25000 – 1:1000000 More than 200 updated space images covering the whole territory • Data on mineral resource management • Geological plans and maps of fields • Data on economic assessment of fields • Data of state geological survey City construction and engineering infrastructure Superficial and underground water resources • Data on superficial water’s regimes • Data on hydrochemical characteristics • Data on underground water deposits • Amount of population allocation • Data on settlements • Data on engineering infrastructure, roads etc.

  7. Examples of information resource use Economic accessibility of forests Environmental monitoring Example: open-cast mine to mine generally found mineral resources in the area of “Chinyavryk-Timan” road construction situated within boundaries of natural protected territory. Example: cost efficiency of forest cutting by TimberJack harvesters, basing on analysis of volume of trunks, amount of resource and distance of transportation

  8. Geology and mineral resource licensing Example: Electronic “Atlas of oil and gas fields of the Komi Republic”, containing detailed fields characteristics (including data necessary for the development planning). Examples of information resource use

  9. Examples of information resource use Nature potential appraisal Transportation infrastructure Underground resources Forest resources Land resources Power engineering Water resources PROSPECTS OF THE REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT
