Role of ITU in promoting ICTs for science • Managing radio-frequency spectrum & satellite orbits for fixed, mobile, broadcasting and other communication services • Offering technical solutions to support implementing e-science • Remote sensing systems, science services, etc. • Developing global telecommunication standards • Next generation networks, grids, multi-media & security • Academia & ITU study groups • Formal languages and description techniques • Promoting growth of ICTs in developing countries • Assisting in developing an enabling legal environment • Assisting in developing national strategies, implementing ICT infrastructure, services, capacity building, etc. • Information sharing world summit on the information society

Concrete actions of ITU-R • Managing radio-frequency spectrum for wireless services • Using relevant technologies for scientific services, e.g. • Systems for space operation, space research, Earth exploration & meteorology; radio astronomy; frequency time systems (study group 7) • Remote sensing systems to collect information by satellite, e.g. RS.1744 • Space applications & meteorology (SA. 1162, SA.1414, SA. 1742) • grid with CERN, INFN-CNAF Bologna, PIC Barcelona, CNB Madrid, DESY Hamburg, Cyfronet Krakow, Moscow State University world summit on the information society
