Young Enterprise UK • Leading business and enterprise education charity • More than 40 years experience • 12 regional organisations across the UK • Supported by the business community and the Government • Business volunteers take an active role • Aim to building a better-motivated, educated and enterprising workforce • Committed to making a real difference to young people

Mission & Vision Mission ‘to inspire and equip young people to learn and succeed through enterprise’ Vision ‘That all young people will have the opportunity to gain personal experience of how business works, understand the role it plays in providing employment and creating prosperity, and be inspired to improve their own prospects and the competitiveness of the UK’

Active and Practical Learning Young Enterprise programmes are based on the principle of "learning by doing" and each programme involves practical, fun, hands-on activity, led by a volunteer from local business or the community working alongside teachers/ lecturers with specifically designed Young Enterprise programmes

History of Young Enterprise • Founded in the 1962/3 academic year by the late Sir Walter Salomon, based on the Junior Achievement model, which had been running in America since 1919 • Company Programme : to enable young people to develop skills and knowledge for business and enterprise through setting up and running their own company with the support of representatives from the business community • 1980s launch of Team Programme • 1990s range of sessional programmes developed • 2000 Primary programmes established

  7. 10 Guiding Principles First Principle To offer young people, irrespective of background and abilities, the opportunity to participate in our programmes

Team Programme • Offers young people who experience difficulties with their learning an opportunity to develop skills for work through a real-life enterprise experience • Students set up and run a company over 1 or 2 academic years • A weekly meeting is attended by a volunteer from business who works with the students • Directly supports the development of key and life skills • Offers students practical experience of work and business • Provides the opportunity for achievement regardless of ability • Flexible programme delivery ensures students of all abilities can take part

Collaboration with SchoolsSkills Development • Working well with others and supporting them • Working out problems in a team • Taking part in meetings and discussions • Helping make important decisions • Leading and encouraging a group of people to work as a team • Talking to people about your company • Producing clear and well presented work using IT when it is the best choice • Planning how the money can be used for the company • Communicating in various contexts e.g. telephone, email, fax etc.

Collaboration with Business Volunteers form the local business community:- • Provide experience of business • Offer role models • Help students to understand the world of business and prepare for their working lives • Become part of an exciting and enjoyable learning experience • Make a real difference to the lives and potential of young people

Collaboration with Business Business Volunteers can gain:- • Personal development and fulfilment • Opportunities to develop professional skills in a real working environment eg particular communication, interpersonal and team working skills • CPD/CPE qualifications for many professional bodies including: ACCA, CIMA, CII, ICAEW, ICSA, IPD, IEE, CIB, CIM, CPS. • Access to training and the opportunity to put into practice new insights • Open University e learning package • Opportunity to meet other similarly committed local business people and broaden their business skills
