  2. Welcome/Prayer WHOSE CHILD IS THIS?Author Unknown"Whose child is this?" Behaviour Expectations • To follow the St Joseph’s Behavioural Policy • Our aims as educators are to encourage the schools 5C’s approach: • Care • Consideration • Courtesy • Common Sense • Co-operation As future leaders of the school, we also encourage: • Responsibility • Respect • Initiative • Leadership skills • Class community • Consequences – Whole school behaviour management plan • Rewards

Homework • Weekly homework handed in on Friday, marked and returned on Monday. • Homework consists of: • Group Spelling Words • Number facts • Maths related to weekly topics • Reading Log • Problem Solving questions • Activities related to other Key Learning Areas. • Writing task • If a student does not hand in homework on time or fully completed 3 times in the term (without written explanation) they will be placed on Level 1 of the Behaviour Management Plan for not meeting deadlines. Homework that is not finished will be completed by students at lunchtime.

Specialist Subjects • Physical Education • Taught weekly by specialist teacher Miss Catie Marshall • The Arts • Music will be taught weekly by Mrs Alicia Freeman • The classroom arts focus will alternate between visual arts, drama and media throughout the year. • Cultural Studies • Taught weekly by specialist teacher Mrs Kate Thinee. Cultural Studies topics for 2012 are: Term 1 – Chinese • Term 2 – Kalkadoon (local indigenous language) • Term 3 – Philippines (links with our Parish Multicultural Festival) • Term 4 – AUSLAN – Sign Language

  6. Religion Term One Unit “Church Community: Words and Actions” Making connections between the practices of healing, teaching and worshipping in the beliefs and teachings proclaimed by the church. Incorporates special Religious days, daily prayer and Christian Meditation.

Mathematics • Continual work on improving recall of times tables and multiplication, division, addition and subtraction sums. • Throughout the school, Mathematics is centered around the iMaths Program. iMaths is all about investigations where students learn about different topics and use their skills and knowledge to investigate Mathematics in a comprehensive and hands-on way. • We integrate multiple resources in order to cater for diverse student needs in Grade 6. • We provide students with problem solving tasks such as those on the Year 3,5,7 NAPLAN tests.

English Literacy Rotations: Five rotations per week • Guided Reading - Small group reading with teacher based on reading ability and reading strategies taught from the First Steps Program. • SRA Reading Laboratory – Multi-leveled system of individualised learning focusing on comprehension and vocabulary skills. • ICT Focus Activity – Students independently use Microsoft Word, Publisher and PowerPoint to complete a set task. • Grammar/Punctuation - Skills taught and reinforced through various activities. • Grammar/Punctuation - Skills taught and reinforced through various activities. Grammar: Explicitly taught grammar skills focusing on one topic per week. THRASS: THRASS is a teaching tool that has been designed to enable the teacher to explain the spelling of words. It enables the student to develop critical thinking skills, problem solving skills and the ability to make good comparisons and judgments when reading and spelling.

Spelling THRASS and Sound Waves spelling program • Students have been assessed to determine their spelling group. • Spelling Activities to learn words - Two days per week and homework • Testing – Pretest on Mondays and a test on Friday. Personal Development Education (PDE) As of term 2, we will be covering these topics in Grade 6 PDE: • Healthy lifestyles • Puberty • Reproductive organs We recognise that parents are the major contributors to their child’s development. As part of the curriculum these topic areas are required to be covered with the use of correct terms. A note will be sent home regarding each topic prior to learning. If you have any questions of concerns please make time to see us.

  11. SOSE Each term year 6 will be focusing on a specific unit topic for SOSE. • Term 1’s focus is on ‘Australian Identities and Celebrations’. Where students learn about the different types of Australian Identities and Celebrations, focusing on pre-colonisation and colonisation of our nation. Students will explore different celebrations that we as Australians celebrate throughout the year. • Term 2, 3 and 4 topics include: ‘Ancient Cultures’, ‘World Environments’ and ‘Systems of Government’

  12. Science • Term 1 – Change Detectives • Term 2 – Earth Quake Explorers • Term 3 – Marvelous Micro Organisms • Term 4 – It’s Electrifying or Essential Energy

  13. Year 6 Camp Location: Gumburu, Paluma Dates: (Term 4) October 15th – 19th October Transport: Bus from Mt Isa to Paluma Watch out for more details to follow in the coming terms!

  14. QCATs Year 6 students will be involved in QCATs (Queensland Comparable Assessment Tasks). This task is focused on an English, Maths or Science theme and helps maintain consistency of teacher judgement throughout all Queensland schools in Grades 4, 6 and 9.

If you have any questions about your child’s progress, we would prefer if you made an appointment time to discuss this with us. Please note: Compulsory parent/teacher interviews will be held towards the end of Term 1. If you are interested and wish to view your child’s classroom, they will be open for another 10 minutes.
