  5. MIDDLE PASSAGE Route from Africa to the Americas as part of the trans-Atlantic trade GROWTH OF AFRICAN POPULATION Imports of slaves grew as colonial land expanded and farming became more profitable.

  6. Middle Passage • Month long journey of African slaves to the Caribbean, Latin America, and North America [Southern colonies]. • Cramped, unsanitary, dehumanizing conditions. • 10 % or more lives were lost during voyage across the Atlantic.

  7. African-American Culture • In many African cultures, masks have been used to tell stories of historical events, adornment for warriors, and parts of costumes for various festivals. Mr. Hunt's "the Passage" embodies three masks representing the spirits of our ancestors who died during the Trans-Atlantic journey from Africa to America (The Middle (Passage). Conceptually, "The Passage" focuses on the idea that even though these ancestors did not make it to America physically, the content of their character, (hard work, love, respect, honor, and strength) survived the journey as it was passed on to their descendents born in America and other countries along the way from Africa.

  8. Benjamin Franklin • Inventor - lightening rods, fire stations • Helped Thomas Jefferson write the Declaration of Independence • Ambassador to France during American Revolution – convinced France to become and ally of America • His life is an example of the social mobility evident and individualism evident in America and not evident in England.

  9. Benjamin Franklin Social Mobility Individualism Forward thinking Improving society education

  10. Great Awakening • Religious revival before the American Revolution. • Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield – famous preachers. • Reaction against Enlightenment Ideas • Inspired independence movement in America

  11. Great Awakening The religious revivals of the Great Awakening encouraged colonists to question traditional authority… One of the first steps on the path to the Revolution!!!!!!
