Florida’s School Bus Safety Inspection Program • Section 1006.22, Florida Statutes, requires the FDOE to maintain an inspection certification program. • School buses that are “available for service” are require to be inspected at a maximum interval of 30-school days. • Inspections must be performed by a certified inspector in accordance with the criteria in the Florida School Bus Safety Inspection Manual. • Certification candidates are required to meet the following prerequisites:

Certification Candidate Prerequisites • Minimum of two years experience as a journeyman level mechanic or successful completion of a two year vehicle maintenance and repair program from an accredited school. • Certification candidate must attend a two-day training course by a Florida certified trainer. • Trainers are certified by the School Transportation Management Section staff during regional two-day train-the-trainer courses. • Certification candidate training includes in-class and hands-on application. • Certification candidate must pass a 100-question written test and a hands-on application test.

Inspection Training Program • Inspection program trainers are school district personnel who have exhibited above average skills, knowledge, and leadership abilities. • Trainers lead candidates through one day of in-class training using the Inspection Program Trainer’s CD in conjunction with the Florida School Bus Safety Inspection Manual. • Day two consists of hands-on training in the shop. Candidates are required to perform several practice/training inspections.
