  3. What is good learning? That may be a subjective question. But it’s likely that many educators would give answers that fall in the same ballpark… …students collaborating and discussing ideas, possible solutions… …project-based learning, designed around real world contexts… …connecting with other students around the world, on topics of study… …immersing students in a learning experience that allows them to grapple with a problem, …gaining higher-order thinking skills from pursuing the solution -MIT

EVOLUTION NOT REVOLUTION OF TEACHING  • Games and Simulations are used to teach doctors and military personnel. • They don’t want you to teach with technology just to utilize what’s there, but instead to use it to help reinforce the content. • The Educational Revolution  Social Reconstructionism

Diplomacy – Video Game • Mr. Ross’s 7th Grade Social Studies Class • Overview – Simulates the political and military conditions of Europe in the late 1800s early 1900s • Helps cover his content and describe why WWI occurred • Teaches the skills of negotiation • Solving problems with collaboration • Teaches students that their actions influence others.

  6. Cheating? • Texting • Finding the answers online • Plagiarism • Instant Messaging • Excuses

  7. Mr. Ross, “Games don’t teach the content… it teaches students the conceptual knowledge and sets the environment for you to teach what you want.”

  8. The Pros • Keep information gathered • Keeps class moving • Online discussions • Unlimited resources • Keeps students up to date with technology

  9. The Cons • Cyber Bullying • Cheating • Slow Connection • Access to Internet at home? • No hard paper copy • Teacher training • Technology FAIL.

  10. According to Slate, • “Finish students were among the fifth best in math and science in 2006. Their classrooms are bare of technology, the have less homework, start school a year later, and do less homework on average.”
