  2. Warm-up: Theme Themes: Universal truths relating to humanity that literature attempts to portray. Usually they are repeating ideas / concepts in the text. Usually stated like this, ex: “Confused Aliens”: Humans are never perfect and mistakes are inevitable. Or Old Yeller: Sometimes we have to make hard decisions that seem negative, but are necessary. Notice this is a general statement and can be true for all humans. Develop your own opinion of what truth you think this book attempts to portray about humanity. State your opinion in a way in which it relates to the world, not only the book. Explain your opinion and paraphrase passages from the text that support your opinion. Note p. numbers of these passages.

  3. Reminder You will turn in ALL of your vocabulary sentences and your answers from our partner discussion guide right before your Vocabulary Test on February 13. Bring your sentences and questions with you. They should be in your vocabulary book, or all written in your Partner discussion guide.

  4. Eulogy Assignment Eulogy: A speech or written tribute, especially one praising someone who has died. 2. High praise or commendation. In your RLN, under your agenda, Title your page “What Makes a Eulogy Work” write: • What do you notice or like about this eulogy? • How is it effective? What makes this piece work? I will read it out loud to you once. Then you will read it one more time alone. Then talk with the person next to you and decide what makes this a good eulogy. We will regroup afterwards to create a master list.

  5. Eulogy Assignment: We will now view our assignment. • Using the Criteria that you say make a eulogy effective, handwrite your own eulogy. You can write your first draft in your RLN. I will collect your final copy during our funeral for Lenny. • You will now have time to brainstorm all of your ideas and pour all of your ideas onto the paper. This first write-up is a chance for you to get everything you want to say on paper for class on Monday. • Make sure that in this rough-write you respond to all criteria on your assignment handout. This is your exit note: you cannot leave the class until you complete this.
