  3. Choosing the Play! MENU!

  4. Big Cast?? Little Cast?? • How many people are going to want parts? • Do you have enough parts for the majority that try out?

  5. Musical? • Are the students musically inclined? • Is there someone who can handle a lead part with the music in their range? • Do you have someone to work with the singers?

  6. Cast • Are there more guys or girls going to want to be involved? • Sufficient amount of parts?

  7. Comedy/Drama • In your area, which would get a better response?

  8. Length • How long can you keep the audiences attention?

  9. Language/Setting • Do you want Shakespearean or current? • Accents?

  10. Dancing • If there is dancing in the play, do you have people who can dance? • Or people that can teach dancing?

  11. Setting • Are these sets easily built or do you need to hire someone?

  12. Money • Is this play affordable? • Costs: • Sets • Costumes • Props • Many more!

  14. Musical? • Who can sing? • Range?

  15. Dance • Can they dance? At all? • Are they teachable?

  16. Chemistry • Is there chemistry with others on stage?

  17. Right for the Part? • Assign people parts that fit them best!

  18. Leadership • The lead should e someone who can handle a leadership role because people will look up to them. • Usually upperclassmen=lead, supporting roles • Underclassmen=small roles, understudies

  20. Choosing the Crew • Need leaders on the crew who can command the attention of people and get things done. • Needs to be able to stay on track. • Needs to boss cast around without coming off bossy. • Not distracting in wings.

  21. Lights/Sound • People who can stay on topic and know how to work this technology. • Good job if you can’t always come to practice because they only come to rehearsal for the last couple of weeks.

  23. Read Through • Read the play the whole way through together to make sure everyone understands the play and their characters.

  27. Sike • The white projector screen in the back of the stage that lights reflect off of. • Do NOT touch this because the oil on your skin messes up the light projections.

  28. A Few Weeks Into Practice… • Start practicing run throughs • Blocking will be altered • Script will be better understood as you run through it more

  30. Sets • Start building sets- usually dads or grandpas will help!

  31. Sets • Once sets are built, put in the spots they are supposed to be for run throughs. • Then tape around them on the ground so crew knows where to put them each time!

  32. Painting • Pick a day for the cast and crew to come in and paint/help finish building sets/get props organized

  33. Crew and Sets • Every piece of the set/props need to be assigned to a crew member. • This way, you know who is responsible for putting each item on the stage.

  35. Costumes • See what costumes you have early • Have the actors try them on so you have time for: • Alterations • Buying new costumes

  37. Make Fliers • Have a student who is artistic make a cook looking flier with dates and times on it.

  38. Distribute Fliers Have each person in cast and crew take flyers to businesses or other places around town or people to see.

  39. Advertisement • Put it on the local radio station • Put it in the local newspaper

  40. Sell Tickets • Have the cast and crew sell tickets to people they know around town, family members, and friends

  42. Lighting/Sound • Write in a script what you want, where you want it • Then start having the people doing sound and lighting start coming to practice about 2 weeks before the show.

  44. Complete Run Throughs • Begin complete run throughs a few weeks before play night • This helps you get a time for how long the play will be • You can shorten it

  45. Notes • Also, the director should start taking notes on things that need improvement • Read these before you begin the next run through

  47. Dress Rehearsal • Come early for dress rehearsal • Use: • hair/makeup • Costumes • Props • Sets • Mics, sound, lights

  48. Yearbook Pictures • If the yearbook is taking pictures they should do so at this time.

  50. Pre-Play • Come right after school-directly-to do: • Hair • Makeup • Last minute details
