  5. John Donne (1572-1631) Student Page [Teacher Page] John Donne was an incredible poet during the English Renaissance who was known for his quick wit and sharp tongue. King James I promoted Donne to Dean of Saint Paul’s Cathedral in London. He attracted massive crowds and was known for his lengthy sermons. In his spare time he wrote tongue in cheek poetry that mocked romantic ideals that other poets had loved. His cynical yet witty thoughts inspired laughter as well as angry uproars. This poetry was later termed “Metaphysical poetry” and to this day Donne remains its master. In order to complete this process of the task you will: • Thoroughly research John Donne’s sermons or poetry. Have at least 8 sources, if you wish, you may use two of the sources I have provided below. • Pick two pieces of Donne’s work to interpret (Check with teacher to make sure someone else is not already interpreting the two you have chosen). • Create an interactive webpage or powerpoint that explains your interpretations (you can upload sources to your webpage or powerpoint that helped you obtain your interpretations). • On your webpage provide credible sources that could further someones knowledge of John Donne. • You will present a 10-15 minute presentation to the class. These are some sources to help you get started (however make sure you find at least 6 of your own!): • http://www.online-literature.com/donne/ • http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/5662 • http://www.poetryfoundation.org/bio/john-donne • For those of you who prefer video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2-C2MHT2F8 • For those of you who prefer books: The Norton Anthology of English Literature (Ninth Edition) (Vol. 1) pages 1370-1430 Title Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits

  7. William Shakespeare (1564-1616) Student Page [Teacher Page] William Shakespeare was a poet and a playwright during the English Renaissance and he is recognized as the greatest writer in the English Language. Shakespeare wrote plays that were very centered on human emotion and conflict. Little is known for sure about Shakespeare but historians believe he was educated at the King Edward IV Grammar School in Stratford-upon-Avon, United Kingdom. There is not much to be said about the history of Shakespeare since his personal history is somewhat of a mystery; some people go as far to say that he never existed. Title Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Completing the process: The whole classroom will be divided into groups of five and each group will be responsible for dividing the work evenly between all of the group members to ensure that the project is completed. 1. In the assignment you will be required to select five different poems or playwrights and one must be a sonnet by William Shakespeare. 2. Give a brief summary of the work, include your favorite part (for the playwright)/line (for the poem) and why, list the main characters (for the playwright), and state the type of work it is (comedy, tragedy, etc.) 3. For the sonnet; list the title of the sonnet, explain why you enjoyed it and give a brief summary of the meaning of the summary. 4. Once you have completed all of the requirements above you will need to prepare a PowerPoint to present the material to the class in a 5-10 minute presentation. 5. Make sure to include all of the sources you used and organize them all in a works cited page at the end of your presentation using MLA format. 8. Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) Student Page [Teacher Page] Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was one of the greatest writer of the Spanish Renaissance. He was a poet, novelist and playwright. He was greatly influential in the Spanish language that often the language is called la lengua de Cervantes (The Language of Cervantes). He is mostly well known for his famous novel Don Quixote. This novel is considered the first modern European novel and a classic of Western literature. This novel was published in two parts, part one in 1605 and part two in 1615. Cervantes also served in the military which helped him on his writing on Don Quixote, because this novel has parts about the differences between soldiers and educated leaders of Spain. Completing the process: 1. The class will be divided into groups of 3 or four. Students will pick their partners and each student will be responsible for participating and doing an equal amount of work. 2. Pick one of the chapters in Cervantes’ Don Quixote and interpret the literary meaning of the chapter or do your work on Cervantes’ life. 3. You will have the choice of creating a powerpoint, Webpage or a video to present to the class. 4. Since this is a Spanish level 4 class, all of your work must be done in Spanish. 5. Provide at least 5 sources in Spanish and 5 in English for your researched work. Also you may only use one of the sources that I have provided. 6. The inclass presentation should be at least 10 minutes and no more than 20 minutes.
