    1. U.S. Westward Expansion 1800’s

    2. Thomas Jefferson’s Agrarian Dream He wanted all citizens and Indians to be self-sufficient farmers.

    3. Lewis & Clark Explored Louisiana territories and beyond to the Pacific Ocean. Jefferson sent them to find a northwest passage connecting the two oceans. Jefferson wanted to relocate Indians in the new territory.

    4. Success of the Exploration Lewis and Clark mapped out the new territory’s land and water features allowing for continued westward expansion. They brought back new species of plants and animals.

    5. Compromise/Conflict With westward expansion, and the compromises of 1820 and 1850 over slave and non slave states, the country continued to divide itself toward two separate nations.
