  3. THE PROCESS OF SUPPORTING THE FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY (1) In the banner there is the supporting process of the functional capacity. First there is a short description of the areas of the functional capacity Life story of the elderly is essential when we start to plan the supporting. The carer cannot understand the elderly without knowing the background factors and the history of the elderly.

  4. THE PROCESS OF SUPPORTING THE FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY (2) Assessing the functional capacity in all areas gives the carer the necessary information, the resources and problems of the elderly. After finding them it is possible to set the aims for supporting. In the Supporting plan has to be written down the resources and problems in all areas of the functional capacity. The aims are discussed and decided together with the elderly and they are written client-oriented. The aims are concrete and adequately short -term so they are possible for the elderly to achieve.  The elderly cannot reach the aims unless the methods the carers use are not suitable and effective.

  5. THE PROCESS OF SUPPORTING THE FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY (3) In good supporting of the functional capacity multi-professional expertise is necessary and the division of work is good to be written down. When the carers think about how to support the elderly they must have a clear idea with what kind of methods and activities the aims of the elderly can be achieved.

  6. THE PROCESS OF SUPPORTING THE FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY (4) A good quality of the supporting is possible if the carers command the supporting process. It is necessary to evaluate the supporting process after certain intervals. In this evaluation process it is possible to see if the aims of the elderly have been achieved. At the same time the carers evaluate if their methods have been correct and effective and have they used them.

  7. THE PROCESS OF SUPPORTING THE FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY (5) The living environment of the elderly is important. It can improve or deteriorate the functional capacity of the elderly.

  8. LIFE STORY • Sitting in a rocking chair • each swing a remembrance from past • my mother died • my father abandoned • My Christmases in an orphanage • at school left alone standing in a corner • my wrath grows • War - bombs are falling • have to run to the shelter - I survived • Man’s compassionate eyes, gentle hands • for us home, happiness, five children • overwhelming woe of entombing a year-old daughter • Arms crossed over my chest without breasts • “I have lived a good, healthy life • well, I had those four cancers”
