  1. Phenix and J. Murray Jeffress Elementary School Spelling Bee On Friday, December 4th, J. Murray Jeffress Elementary School held its annual Spelling Bee. After the students at Phenix and J.M.J. held their classroom spelling bees, the winners and runner-ups from each of the classes participated in the school’s competition. Representing Phenix Elementary School were Rosemarie Fredman, school winner, and Elijah Harmon, school runner-up. From Mrs. McCargo’s third grade class were Evan Waller, winner, and Shiloh Turner, class runner up. On behalf of Mrs. Mitchell’s third grade homeroom, were Hannah Goldman, winner, Alexis Edwards, runner-up. From the fourth grade classrooms, representing Mrs. Gilliam’s room was winner, Chelsey Aliff, and runner-up, Abby Michaelson. Ms. Jennings’ class was represented by Kelby Trent, winner, and runner-up David Hamlett. Mrs. Dotten’s homeroom was represented by Sharonda Barley. In the fifth grade, from Ms. Bader’s homeroom, Michael Brown was the classroom winner and Chante’ Elam was the runner-up. Mrs. Brown’s classroom winner was Adam Layne and her runner-up was Kendrik Goldman. The judges for the Spelling Bee were Mr. Walt Bailey, Mrs. Brenda Haskins, and Mrs. Holly Layne. Mrs. Rhonda Jones, Reading Specialist for our schools, was the caller. Round 15 marked the elimination round. The battle was on! The two remaining contestants, Michael Brown and Shiloh Turner, had each spelled three words correctly when Shiloh and then Michael misspelled “receive”. Shiloh then misspelled “examine”. Michael Brown spelled “examine” correctly, as well as the word “piano” to be declared our Spelling Bee champion. Shiloh Turner was awarded a trophy signifying his position as runner-up and Michael Brown, the Spelling Bee winner, received a first place trophy. All participants were presented with certificates and “goody bags.” Michael and Shiloh will advance to the Charlotte County Spelling Bee to be held in January at Central Middle School.
