  2. Earlier this year we developed the Big Ideas for each of the chapters in Geometry and Algebra II. Today we’ll refocus on these Big Ideas. We’ll look at all the materials we have available to use and work together to decide how we can design a lesson that will most successfully help students demonstrate they have the needed understanding. We’ll divide into two groups Study various chapters Share our finding with the group Study other chapters Share our finding with the group
  3. You will work with: Textbook Examples, Textbook Investigations, Textbook Exercises, and More Practice Your Skills We will focus on five chapters of material in each subject. Geometry Transformations Area Pythagorean Theorem Volume Trigonometry Algebra II Trigonometry Quadratics Exponents Functions Rational Functions

Example from Algebra II: TRIGONOMETRY Chapter 12: Students learn and understand that trigonometry, the mathematics of similar triangle and ratios (sine, cosine, and tangent), can be used to model real-world problems by working with distances and angles. In addition to special ratios in 30o-60o-90oand 45o-45o-90otriangles, trigonometric ratios will be applied to other triangles by studying the Law of Sines and Law of Cosines (a generalization of the Pythagorean Theorem).
  5. Analyzing Chapter 12 in Advanced Algebra What sections will you be covering? Will you be including the Refreshing Your Skills in your study? If so, support why. What is the reason why? How will you help the student recall some of these previously studied facts? How will this section help accomplish the Big Idea? Are their ideas along the edge of the teacher’s edition that you ought to pay attention to?
  6. How will section 12-1 help accomplish the Big Idea for Chapter 12? What are the main objectives for this lesson? How do you think you can best reach these objectives? How does this section build on the foundation of the Refreshing Your Skills? Can you think of a chart that you might want to design for this lesson?
  7. What do you think will help students build understanding for lesson 12.1? Check the textbook examples, textbook exercises, the investigation, More Practice Problems. What do you think is important to complete? Support each problem. How will the problem be completed? How will you assess student understanding?
  8. Review section 12.2. How does this section fit in with the Big Idea of chapter 12? Could you think how you can integrate the investigation into the lesson? How can you integrate some “practice” before moving to the ambiguous case in example C? What would your goal be? When would you introduce example C?
  9. Review all the type of problems. What would you include? When? Why?
  10. Review section 12.3. How does this section fit in with the Big Idea of chapter 12? Could you think how you can integrate the example A into becoming an investigative exercise? What would you goal in completing this exercise? What exercises would you include to insure student understanding of the topic of Law of Cosines?
  11. Review all the type of problems. What would you include? When? Why?
  12. Example from Geometry: TRANSFORMATIONS Chapter 7: Building upon the knowledge learned in chapter 11, student discover, experiment, and understand the effects of rigid and non-rigid transformations on a figure drawn in two-dimensions to observe special angle relationships and side relationships.
  13. What sections will you be studying in chapter 7? What type of activities do you need to include from chapter 7 to meet the Big Idea for this chapter so students experience and discover the needed relationships? Do any of the investigations need to be modified for your students to complete them?
  14. Review the type of exercises available to you through the textbook investigations, examples, exercises and more practice problems. Which would you include? Why? How Many? How will students complete the exercises? How will students demonstrate understanding and what they have discovered?
  15. In your Groups Working with two given chapter consider Textbook Examples Textbook Investigations Textbook Exercises More Practice Your Skills Identify the examples, investigations, exercises, etc. that you believe need to be part of the lesson. Follow the same type of reasoning we used with the two example chapters. Write up a description for each assigned chapter.
