  2. Welcome Dance/Cheer Candidates Thank you for your interest in the BHS spirit squads. Please find a seat. Everyone should have signed in and received a tryout packet.

  3. BHS Freshmen • There will be a cheer team consisting of 12-24 cheerleaders. • There will be a dance team consisting of 12-20 dancers. • You may NOT try out for both. You must choose dance or cheer.

  4. JV Cheer/Dance • JV is open to 10-11th graders!!! • There will be a JV team consisting of 10-16 cheerleaders for junior varsity cheer. • There will be a JV team consisting of 10-16 dancers for junior varsity dance.

  5. Varsity Cheer/Dance • There will be a varsity cheer team consisting of approximately 10-20 girls and up to 8 boys. • There will be a varsity dance team consisting of approximately 10-20 dancers.

  6. Eligibility • A physical must be completed and turned in on the form provided by April 28/29th, the first day of clinic. No exceptions. You cannot participate without a physical. This form must be signed by the doctor and parent. http://users.bentonville.k12.ar.us/bhs/spirit.asp • You must have a 2.0 GPAto attend clinic and tryouts. • Form 1 and Form 2 and your resume must be turnedin on April 28/29th, the first day of clinic. See packet. • You must attend both days of the clinic the week before tryouts.

  7. Physicals and Eligibility • BEFORE you can attend the clinic and tryout, you must provide Mrs. Kaufman with a completed physical on the form that is provided by the school. This form (2 pages) is available for print online on the BHS spirit webpage. It does require a parent signature. • Completed physical forms are due on or before April 28/29th. • NO ONE MAY PARTICIPATE IN THE CLINIC OR TRYOUT WITHOUT A PHYSICAL. • You may use any physician. Free physicals are being offered. Please check the district website for this information. • Physical forms must be filled out and signed by the doctor. The form must also be signed by the parent. Physicals will not be accepted on another form. • All students must have a 2.0 GPA to tryout. • New Students: must show proof that you live in BPS attendance zone and will be enrolling and attending.

  8. Expectations • #1: Promote school spirit, good sportsmanship, and a positive attitude at all times. • Practices-attend all scheduled. • Master all cheers/chants/routines. • Academics are a top priority. Make the grade. Stay eligible. No zeroes! • Follow all AAA, school, and team rules. • Attend Summer Camp • All cheer (9/JV/Varsity) will be going to camp June 10-13 in Norman, OK at OU. This is mandatory. No exceptions. • All dance (9/JV/Varsity) will be going to camp in Tulsa, OK June 17-20 at the University of Tulsa. This is mandatory. No exceptions.

  9. Time Requirements • The cheer and dance teams have the largest time of commitment of all sports. • We volunteer for a variety of activities year round. We serve the community!! We are leaders!! • Practices are during class time for all squads, early morning and sometimes late in the evening, for varsity cheer and dance, and before games for 9th . • All team members are required to attend all practices, camp, games, competitions, and other events. • Remember, you “commit” for the whole year!! We expect you to honor that commitment.

  10. Games • Varsity-Friday night football games; Tuesday and Friday basketball games • JuniorVarsity-Monday night football games; all home Friday night football games; Tuesday and Friday basketball games; some Friday night home Varsity Basketball games • 9th-Thursday night football games every week; Monday and Thursday basketball games

  11. Competition • Competitive dance season will be from the beginning of school through the first Saturday in November. • Competitive cheer season will be from the beginning of school through the first Saturday in December. • Per AAA: A member of an interscholastic spirit team may not compete on a non-school team during the interscholastic spirit season.

  12. Dual Sports • Spirit squad members have the right to participate in another sport. However, since the membership on the team is voluntary and all year, this must be priority over any non-school related activities. (i.e. club sports, all-star cheer, dance company) This is especially true during competition season. This will be handled on an individual basis.

  13. Expenses • Costs include camp/bus ($280.00), camp clothes, poms (dance only?), shoes, bloomers, warm-ups, jacket, bag, socks, ribbon, misc. items. The cost is not to exceed $800.00 for the entire season. This can be paid in installments. Scholarship applications will also be available. Red line items do NOT have to be re-purchased if you have been on a spirit squad in Bentonville before. • Team pictures will be taken for the yearbook and competition. There will be no requirement to purchase pictures.

  14. Clinic Info (This is in your packet!) • Cheer: wear black shorts, white t-shirt or tank, tennis shoes. • Dance: wear knee-length black shorts, black capris, or black jazz pants, white t-shirt or tank, dance shoes (encouraged but not required). • Hair should be pulled back, out of face, and no whispies. • No gum or jewelry allowed. • Nails should be cut and nail polish is not allowed. (AAA) • Materials will be taught by BHS senior cheerleaders and senior dancers. • The clinic is CLOSED. Participants only. No parents and no video taping allowed. • No food or soft drinks will be allowed in the gym. You may bring a water bottle. • Cheer/Dance music will be available on CD for $1.00.

  15. Clinic Days and Tryout Day (Packet) • April 28, Monday from 4:30-6:30 PM at BHS, Dance ONLY • April 29, Tuesday from 4:30-6:30 PM at BHS, Cheer ONLY • April 30, Wednesday from 4:30-6:30 at BHS, Dance ONLY • May 1, Thursday, from 4:30-6:30 PM at BHS, Cheer ONLY • May 2, Friday, from 4:30-5:30 PM, Optional (attendance not required) Review for Cheer & Dance in EAST/WEST Gyms • May 3, Saturday, Cheer will report at 8:00 AM, Tryouts should begin at approximately 8:30 AM. Dance will report at approximately 11:00 AM, Tryouts should begin at approximately 11:30 AM. This is subject to change depending on the number of participants for cheer/dance.

  16. Tryout Day (Packet) • Saturday, May 3rd, 2008 • Begin promptly at 8:30 AM with 9 Cheer followed by JV/Varsity Cheer. • Cheer: Wear Black Shorts/White Tee/Tank/Tennis Shoes (numbers may be pinned or ironed on) • Dance: Black Knee Length Shorts, Capris, or Jazz Pants, White Tee or tank, Jazz Shoes (numbers may be pinned or ironed on) • Hair for cheer/dance must be in a ponytail and all hair must be out of your face. No messy buns, messy ponytails or whispies. Shorts may only be rolled once. • No long nails or nail polish. (AAA) • Selections will be posted on the East Door Entrance and on the BHS Spirit Web Page.

  18. Cheer Skills List **Standing Back Handspring required for Varsity Cheer. • Spirit and Enthusiasm (Voice, Facial Expression, Confidence) • Gymnastics-watching for technique and difficulty (cartwheels, roundoffs, back handspring, series of back handsprings, back tucks, handspring/tucks, layouts, xouts, fulls, variety of skills in a series) • Jumps-PYT and good posture (single toe touch, pike, front hurdler, variety of jumps, jump sequence, tumbling/jumps)  • Dance (sharp motions, keeps beat, expression) • Motion Technique (Arm levels, sharp motions, and correct fists) • Memory • Overall Impression
