  2. Hay can mean either “there is” or “there are.” • Hay helado. • There’s ice cream. • Hay sillas. • There are chairs.

  3. In a question, hay means “Is there?” or “Are there?” • ¿Hay ensalada hoy? • Is there salad today? • ¿Hay papas fritas? • Are there french fries?

  4. No hay means “there isn’t any” or “there aren't any.” In a question it means “isn’t there any?” or “Aren’t there any?”

  5. No hay helado. • There isn’t any ice cream. • No hay sillas. • There aren’t any chairs. • ¿No hay limonada? • Isn’t there any lemonade?

  6. ¿Cuántos/Cuántas? • We use ¿Cuántos? With masculine plural nouns. • We use ¿Cuántas? With feminine plural nouns.

  7. Cuántos/as . . .asks how many? • ¿Cuántos libros hay? • How many books are there? • ¿Cuántas banderas hay? • How many flags are there?

  8. When we ask the question ¿Cuántos? or ¿Cuántas?, the answer will sometimes include the word muchos, -as, or pocos, -as.

  9. ¿Cuántos periódicos hay? • Hay muchos. • How many newspapers are there? • There are many.

  10. ¿Cuántas guitarras hay?How many guitars are there? • Hay pocas. • There are a few.

  11. Practice • ¿Cuántas sillas hay? • ¿Hay muchos estudiantes en tu clase? • ¿Cuántos libros hay en la mesa? • No hay muchos.

  12. How many chairs are there? • Are there many students in your class? • How many books are there on the table? • There aren’t many.
