  2. What Do I Need to Graduate? • Pass all parts of the High School Graduation Exam • Earn 25 Carnegie Units • Pass all required coursework

Alabama High School Graduation Exam • The assessment will test five subject areas: reading, language, mathematics, biology, and social studies • Once a subject test is passed, the student will not have to take that subject test again. • The Alabama State Board of Education requires that any student receiving an Alabama High School Diploma must pass all five subject tests of the Alabama High School Graduation Exam (AHSGE).

  4. “What’s a Carnegie Unit?” • Carnegie unit- a standardized unit of measurement for evaluating courses in secondary schools in terms of college entrance and graduation requirements, representing one year's study in any subject, that subject having been taught for a minimum of 120 classroom hours to qualify. (Example: Each semester passed of 10th Grade English equals .5 carnegie unit. Completers will accumulate 1.0 carnegie units after completing 10th Grade English.) 25 Carnegie Units are required for Oneonta City Schools.

  5. “How Do I Know If I Passed All My Coursework?” AHSD/Advance Academic Endorsement AHSD/Advanced Career and Technical Endorsement English – 4 Credits Math – 4 Credits (Must include Algebra II with Trig) Science – 4 Credits Social Studies – 4 Credits LIFE PE – 1 Credit Career Tech Ed – 3 Credits Health - .5 Credit Fine Art - .5 Credit Computer Application - .5 Credit Electives – 3.5 Credits Online Experience • English – 4 Credits • Math – 4 Credits (Must include Algebra II with Trig) • Science – 4 Credits • Social Studies – 4 Credits • LIFE PE – 1 Credit • Foreign Language – 2 Credits • Health - .5 Credit • Fine Art - .5 Credit • Computer Application - .5 Credit • Electives – 4.5 Credits • Online Experience

Your Sophomore Year • Continue to take and plan challenging high school courses. • All 10th grade students will take the PLAN (Pre-ACT) on Wednesday, November 2, 2011. • Prepare to take the ACT and/or SAT. • Attendance, grades and leadership count! Keep up the good work! • Begin collecting new accomplishments and place in a file to use when creating your senior resume. • Stay committed to your extracurricular activities! If you don’t have any, try one out or volunteer your time to community service. • Start collecting college information. • Continue/start saving for college. • Become familiar with the Oneonta High School’s website and Counselors’ Corner. • Don’t wait until your senior year! Now’s the time to get started.

GPAGrade Point Average • Two Types: Standard and Numeric • Standard GPA – based on 4.0 scale Regular Classes Honors AP • A = 4.0 = 4.5 = 5.0 • B = 3.0 = 3.5 = 4.0 • C = 2.0 = 2.5 = 3.0 • D = 1.0 = 1.5 = 2.0 • F = 0.0 = 0.0 = 0.0 Calculating standard GPA – Includes all grades accumulated in grades 9-12. Add standards and divide by number of classes taken. Aide is not included in averages. • Numeric GPA – based on numerical grade average

  9. GPA and ACT/SAT scores are important for college admission decisions, scholarship opportunities, and NCAA eligibility.

  10. Sophomores Must Seize ALL Opportunities! • Listen carefully to WOHS announcements! • Attend College Fairs! • Create a file and begin by putting postsecondary information inside! • Create a special email address for all postsecondary inquiries (applying for scholarships, college admissions, senior updates from your counselor, etc.)
