  2. Le Curtiss SB2C Helldiver II a été conçu pour remplacer le Douglas SBD Dauntless en tant que bombardier en piqué standard embarqué sur les porte-avions de la marine américaine. Il a remporté le concours face au prototype de Brewster. Toutefois, les équipages de l’US Navy n’ont jamais apprécié cet appareil, lourd aux commandes et aux freins de piqué peu efficaces. Ils le surnommèrent « The Beast » (la bête), et cela n’avait rien d’affectueux. A tel point que l’avion qu’il devait remplacer, le Dauntless, moins performant mais plus apprécié, a continué à être fabriqué jusqu’en 1944…. Il reste qu’ il a tout de même été fabriqué à plus de 7000 exemplaires, et qu’il a vu le combat jusqu’en 1954 avec l’Aéronavale française (en Indochine).
