  1. Robert Flanagan, Saji Varghese and Colin O’Dowd Centre for Climate and Air Pollution Studies (C-CAPS) Environmental Change Institute National University of Ireland, Galway Baerbel Langman University of Hamburg Impact of marine Aerosol on Cloud Microphysics

  2. Overview • Implementing a cloud droplet activation parameterization in the REMOTE Regional Climate Model • Combined organic-inorganic sea spray source function • Output from M7 and environmental variables from REMOTE • Number and size of cloud droplets • Effect on precipitation and cloud lifetime • Radiative forcing

  3. REMOTE (REgional MOdel with Tracer Extension) • The three-dimensional high resolution regional climate model • Dynamics is based on the regional weather forecast model system of the German Weather Service while physical parameterizations are based on the ECHAM4 model • Aerosol dynamics is based on the modal aerosol model M7 • Includes RADM2 chemistry • Driven by ECMWF analysis data every 6 hours at lower and lateral boundaries

  4. Parameterization • Based on the work of Nenes and Seinfeld JGR, 2003… Input • Lognormal representation • Densities • Soluble mass fraction • Molar mass • Environmental variables Output • Cloud droplet number • Also testing the parameterization of Abdul-Razzak and Ghan • Test simulations are currently ongoing
