  2. What is it? • School leaving age is the legal age that one is allowed to leave mandated secondary education at. • Different countries set different school leaving ages based on what they feel is beneficial for their state and people.

  3. Economic Factors • School Leaving Age often corresponds with the minimum age required to be employed. • This is often determined by whether or not nations are well of economically. • Studies have begun to show, however, that the school leaving age should be increased to 18 because it helps people get jobs in the long term.

  4. Economic Factors • First world countries usually set the minimum employment age right after the school leaving age. • This provides a smooth transition. • Many third world countries set the minimum employment age before the school leaving age. • This tempts students to leave without completing education to go and get a job.

  5. Results of those actions • Studies have shown that: • Students who leave school to get jobs at an early age have lesser chances of getting jobs. • Furthermore: • Students of parents who stayed in school longer than other parents tend to pursue higher education themselves. • This shows that staying in education longer helps getting a job.

  6. Psychological Factors • Some countries also put the minimum employment age a few years after the school leaving age. • Two possible reasons: • Actively encouraging students to get a college degree. • Considering whether or not students are able to handle the burden of working and studying at the same time. • These burdens can cause students psychological trauma and can have detrimental long term effects.
