  1. Proper Quote Integration Practice World Literature

  2. What is Wrong with this paragraph? The Kite Runner deals with issues of atonement and redemption. This theme is most evident in the character Amir. “There is a way to be good again.” (1). Amir also says, “It was a past of unatoned sins.” (1) which explains that Amir believes his life is filled with things that have not been made up for. Baba also represents atonement. “Children aren’t coloring books. You don’t get to fill them with your favorite colors.” (21).

  3. What is wrong with this paragraph? Original text Correct the text The Kite Runner deals with issues of atonement and redemption. This theme is most evident in the character Amir. “There is a way to be good again.” (1). Amir also says, “It was a past of unatoned sins.” (1) which explains that Amir believes his life is filled with things that have not been made up for. 4. Quote Integration Reminders • The quote you are using should be relevant and illustrate your point. • All quotes must be introduced, cited and expanded on. • Example: In Amir’s attempt to atone for his mistakes as a child, he returns to Afghanistan. On his travels Amir reminisces, “Once, over those mountains, I had made a choice. And now, a quarter of a century later, that choice landed me right back on this soil” (241). Amir struggles with his decision to return home, but ultimately feels that his return will bring closure to the broken relationship between him and Hassan through Sohrab.

  5. Ways to introduce a quote: • Introduce a quote with a complete sentence and a colon. • Use an introductory or explanatory phrase followed by a comma. Amir shows the same loyalty as Hassan when he states, “for you a thousand times over” (371). • Make the quotation part of your own sentence without any punctuation between your words and the quote. This is where you should be with your quote integration. Amir’s final defeat of Assef created an “irrevocable bound” between him and Sohrab (320). If you chose the option above, you may have to change something in the original text to make the quote fit in your sentence. To do this place the change in brackets [].

  6. Expanding on a quote Do’s Don’t Do write 2-3 sentences after the quote that ties it to the assertion you are making. Do refer back to a quote by repeating part of the quote. Do expand on the quote. In some cases, just plopping a quote in is worse than not including one in the essay. It confuses the reader. When you explain a quote your explanation should some how refer back to your thesis. Repeat what the quote says Don’t refer to a quote by saying “this quote shows” Don’t simply move to the next point. If the quote is important enough to be in your essay, it is important enough to be discussed. Don’t narrate your essay. You should avoid saying things like “this quote is included to prove my thesis”

  7. Citing a Quote • All citations should always be done in MLA format (no it is not going away). • The citations should be in parenthesis (). It should include the author (if writing about more than one work) and the page number. The period goes after the closing parenthesis.

  8. Practice Directions: Integrate the following quotes into your own sentence that explains their meaning. • “So it goes” (2) • “You know– you never wrote a story with a villain in it” (10) • “He is still very much alive in the past, so it is very silly for people to cry at his funeral” (34) • “…because they could not see as well as his little green friends on Tralfamadore” (36)
