  2. Mobilizing the Troops • 1st Battle of Bull Run occurred 25 miles south of Washington D.C. • Stonewall Jackson and the Confederates defeated the Union Army. • Result of the defeat the was that the war would take longer to win and the need of more troops. • The North began issuing a bounty to anyone who would enlist for 3 years.

  3. Naval War • The Monitor (Union) & The Merrimack (Confederates) fought a battle at the James River in Va. on March 9, 1862. • Result was that the south could not break the Northern blockade. • Another objective of the North was to close Southern ports. • New Orleans was captured by Union troops on April 25, 1862.

  4. War in the West • U.S. Grant began a campaign in which he was to capture the Cumberland & Tennessee rivers. This cut the Confederacy in half and provided a river rte deep into Confederate territory. • The Battle of Shiloh . Surprise attack by the Rebels on Gen. Grant. The Union won the battle but the cost in human lives were great.

  5. The War in the East • Lincoln appointed Gen. McClellan to be CinC of Union forces. • McClellan planned to attack and capture Richmond. • June ‘62 McClellan was attacked by southern forces. • McClellan was forced to retreat back to D.C.

  6. The War in the East • The Battle of Antietam. Lee attacked Union forces defending Washington D.C. • Lee thought by defeating Union forces in the North it would get the South recognition and it’s independence.

  7. The War in the East • The Battle of Antietam was fought on Sept. 17, 1862. It is the bloodiest day in American history. • Over 23,000 killed and wounded. • Battle took place near Sharpsburg, Md.

  8. The Battle of Antietam • Results: • Union defeated the Confederacy. • Britain did not recognize the South. • Lincoln decides to free the slaves in the South.

Emancipation Proclamation • Lincoln did not want to offend border states by freeing the slaves in those states so he chose to end slavery in the South . • Lincoln’s primary purpose was to preserve the Union. • Sept. 22, 1862 Lincoln announced he would issue the Emancipation Proclamation. • Transformed the war from preserving to a war of liberation.

  10. Military Life • Hard & Tough • Food was tasteless . Consisted of hardtack (biscuit), beans, dried salt pork and coffee. • Disease from unsanitary hospital conditions. • Measles, mumps, smallpox, dysentery, gangrene & typhoid were the main killers. • POW prisons also killed many soldiers.

  11. Blacks & Women • Blacks contributed on both sides of the war. • The 1st Black Regt was the 54th Massachusetts. • Became famous for its actions throughout the war. • Women played a significant role serving as nurses, running businesses and taking care of the family farm and home.
