  1. Endometrial Cancer This is a type of cancer that forms in the tissue lining the uterus. Affecting over 40,100 women each year Accounting for 7,470 deaths this year.

  2. Symptoms • Unusual vaginal bleeding or discharge • Diffcult or painful urination • Pain during intercourse • Pain in the pelvic area- usally late in the process

  3. Risk Factors • Age- women over the age of 50 • History of endometrial hyperplasia • Hormone replacement therapy (used after menopause) • Obesity • History of smoking • Race- white women are more likely to get endometrial cancer • Women with the inherited form of colorectal cancer

  4. Diagnosing and Staging • Endometrial Biopsy • Transvaginal ultrasound • The most reliable way to stage is to remove the uterus • Stage I—The cancer is only in the body of the uterus • Stage II–Has spread from the body to the cervix • Stage III– Has spread outside the uterus but not out of pelvis. May be in the pelvis lymph nodes. • Stage IV– Has spread into the bladder or rectum or other body parts

  5. Treatments • Total hysterectomy with removal of lymph nodes • Radiation therapy (externally or intravaginally) • Chemotherapy (Adriamycin, Platinol, 5-FU, carboplatin, and Taxol) • Progesterone hormonal therapy (Megace is the treatment of choice) • Nolvadex (alone or with progesterone when caner is advance or recurrent)

  6. Nursing Care • Before • Educating client to continue with yearly screening even after menopause • Educating about risks factors • After • Teach common side effects of radiation, chemo and progesterone therapy • Educate on nutrition needs and keeping a healthy weight • Monitor for bleeding post-opt

  7. Nursing care continued • Assess pain level • Encourage Deep Breathing • Allow client to verbalized feeling over loss of body functioning • Identify support groups available to client

  8. Nursing Diagnoses • Anxiety • Acute pain • Disturbed body image • Ineffective sexuality pattern • Ineffective breathing pattern • Grieving
