  1. Began when Songhai king conquered a weak Mali Empire and expanded territory. • Social/Culture: • Use Niger River for transport, fishing, hunting, agriculture and trade, particularly gold. • In 1009, king of Songhai converted to Islam and moved to Goa which attracted Muslim merchants and scholars, causing it to become a very important settlement and commercial center. It eventually became the capital. • Scholars traveled to University of Sankore in Timbuktu to study manuscripts • The city of Djenne was a center of learning. • Political: • Divided into five large provinces • Each had own governor, Islamic court, and professional fighting force • Main sources of government income was tribute, produce from farms, and taxes on trade. • Caste system • Economic: • Gold, kola nuts, and slaves were traded for salt, cloth, cowries, and horses. • Cloth was woven in towns like Djenne, Timbuktu, and Gao. • Niger River was greatly used Gene Barber, Will Hollon, Gentry Riddle, Dakota Shively & MarleeTevis The Songhai Empire
