  1. 11 T Dipole Status at CERN Dec-12 M. Karppinen

  2. Construction Status • 2 Cu-coils and 1 Nb3Sn (WST strand) have been wound and cured: • No issues with cable stability, winding tension typically around 30 kg. • Cu-coil being prepared for a shortened reaction cycle to check the tooling and the procedures. It will also give the first idea of the high-T resistance of the S2-glass braiding. • WST coil will be reacted in Jan-13 and used for mechanical models. • Cored cable made of LARP 54/61 is being insulated with S2-glass-Mica and winding will commence on the 2nd half of Jan. • Tooling: • Reaction furnace commissioning in progress. • Vacuum impregnation system delayed again due to problems with heater wire feed-throughs. We are looking into alternative solutions to pot the first coils (vac. bag). • Impregnation tooling and reaction tooling complete. • Collaring tooling ordered, coil assy tooling delivered.

  3. Mechanical model • FNAL modified practice coil section are presently used. Issues with asymmetric coil geometry and incorrect pole angle. • Collar pressing surfaces show plastic deformation and the long collar mid-plane will be adapted to avoid top and bottom halves lining up. • Awaiting for WST coil with more accurate geometry. To adapt (-0.2..0.3) Defrom.

  4. Status of Topics Requested by Sponsors • Magnet test protocol: • First draft of test program including warm and cold test has been sent to FNAL. • Contact between Hugo (cold test), Lucio(magnetic measurements) and Guramestablished. • Quench protection studies: • Draft of the studies made by Bernhard using ROXIE has been circulated and it has published at CERN as an internal note. • Studies on inter-layer heaters in progress. • Trial of inter-layer heater concepts underway. • FNAL studies are in progress. • A video meeting with this topic is planned for early January.

  5. Status of Topics... • Structural analysis: • Two out of 4 concepts have been analysed at CERN: CERN coil with CERN coldmass, FNAL coils with CERN cold mass. • The FE-modeling features, material properties etc. were discussed during FNAL visit and the models were updated accordingly. • Both cases can be made with practical shims and the stress level stay well within a safe range coils and other components. • FNAL coils with two alternative coldmass concepts were discussed. Further optimisation is in progress in view of a mechanical model. • It was agreed that FNAL would analyse the variant with CERN coils in FNAL coldmass. • A video meeting is planned on this topic on 18 December.

  6. CERN Procurement Status (1/2) • Collars: • Full set (2-m-long collared coil) of collars at CERN. Dimensional control confirmed very good dimensional accuracy. • An order for fin-blanking of 3 sets with 2 optional sets has been raised and press tool is being made. • Yoke laminations: • Full 1-in-1 yoke has been delivered and dimensionally inspected at CERN. • 2nd 1-in-1 yoke has been ordered and expected by May-13. • 2-in-1 yoke order has been raised. Delivery of 8 off lamination sets (3 lams) is expected in Feb-13, 300 mm worth of lams for mechanical model by End of Mar-13, the 2-m-long yoke by Jun/Jul-13. • Outer shells: • Order placed and base material delivery expected in Mar-13. • Welding trials (1 m) in Apr-13.(TBC) • 2-m-long 1-in-1 shells in May, 2-in-1 in July.(TBC)

  7. Procurement (2/2) • Wedge profiles made from ODS-alloy: • Wedges 1-2 delivered. Dimensional accuracy very good. • Wedges 3-5 completed and being delivered. • End spacers: • 5 sets of CNC-machined keys and saddles ordered. • 5 sets of intermediate SLS spacers being ordered. • Pole wedges: • 2 sets of Ti-wedges ordered. • End plates: • Tendering started for 1-in-1 and 2-in-1 plates.

  8. SC-strand • CERN expect delivery of 30 km RRP 132/169 by X-mas. • Cabling trial planned provisionally early Jan-13. • Extracted strand measurement by Mid-Feb. • Cabling of 1..3 unit lengths for CERN 2 m coil towards End-Feb. • Cable Insulation by Mid-Mar • 15 km of 108/127 in stock at CERN • Cabling of one unit length to fit in the cabling schedule. This could be supplied to FNAL once 132/169-cable has been validated.
