MARK 5:1-20 1 Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes. 2 And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, 3 who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him, not even with chains, 4 because he had often been bound with shackles and chains. And the chains had been pulled apart by him, and the shackles broken in pieces; neither could anyone tame him. 5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones.

  3. I. The Country: (vs.1) • Eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee: • Country (another identifying feature, non Jewish location; predominately gentile.) • Gadarenes, (Strong fortress, spiritual dark) 1 Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes.

  4. II. The Community Response to consumption: (vs.2-5) A. Society had no place for him to live: (SECLUSION, except the tombs, grave yard) B. Society had no means to bind him; control, protect themselves from him: C. Society had no program to “tame” him (“SUBDUE”, Control) D. Society had cure for him: (shrieking, asceticism, physical harm, • Note: The time frame, “night and day” (pointing to the extreme endless nature of this demonic influence.)

  5. III. The Consideration of the world of the evil one: (vs.6-9) • 1 John 3:8 8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. • James 2:19 19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe--and tremble!

The Consideration of the world of the evil one: (vs.6-9) Hebrews 2:14-15 14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. Matthew 25:41 41 "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

  7. IV. The Command Is Immediately Followed: (vs.10-13) A. Immediate Submission: (vs.10) 10 Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country. B. Immediate Release: (vs.11,12) 11 Now a large herd of swine was feeding there near the mountains. 12 So all the demons begged Him, saying, "Send us to the swine, that we may enter them." C. Immediate Destruction: (vs.13) 13 And at once Jesus gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits went out and entered the swine (there were about two thousand); and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the sea.

  8. V. The commission: (vs.14,15) • Jesus and changed people captivate a community: (vs.14-16) • Jesus and changed people are a threat to daily life: (vs.17-18) • Jesus and changed people are responsible to communicate the Good News: (vs.19,20)

  9. APPLICATION YOUR WORLD HAS PEOPLE OUT OF CONTROL: YOUR WORLD IS MISUNDERSTOOD: YOUR WORLD IS CONTROLLED BY THE EVIL ONE: YOUR WORLD CAN ONLY BE CHANGED BY JESUS YOUR WORLD IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY:
