  1. Improvement of Brown Plant Hopper Resistant Rice in Lower Northern Region of Thailand Using Mass Aided Selection Group 5

  2. Background • Lower northern region of Thailand • Ranked as the largest irrigated basin • Good functional irrigation network system • Rice occupies almost 80% of the area • Rice can be grown all year round • Mixing with 2-3 crop seasons a year

  3. State of Problems • Brown plant hopper (Nilapavata lugens) (BPH) • hopper burn and transmitting viral disease • Chemical control • problem to human and environment.

  4. State of Problems • . • Host plant resistance technique • Development and production of resistant rice varieties • Unfortunately, they could not be used for last • Time limitation factor making difficult for the plant breeder • Need faster development new improved variety

  5. State of Problems • . • Marker aided selection techniques (MAS) • Discovery of BPH resistant genes and the development of their makers • Make BPH resistant rice improvement more practical and easier with MAS technique.

  6. Objectives To improve the brown plant hopper resistant traits of rice in the lower northern of Thailand

  7. Materials and methods The recipient is Chinat 1 Many advantageous traits: elongation, extra long grain, low chalkiness, high yield, blast resistance, well adapt to grow in Thailand, better price of grain, high amylose content, best for noodle production, BPH resistance etc.

  8. Materials and methods The donors: • Abhaya (Abhaya and Kaw Dok Mali (KDML 105)) BC4/F6 (540-2-1-8) backcross introgressed line of KDML105 • E10M13-1 suggested as bph4 • E4/M2-1 expected to be Bph10 • Rathu Heenati (Rathu Heenati and Kaw Dok Mali (KDML 105)) BC2-F3 backcross introgressed line • Bph3

  9. Bc introgressed line Bc introgressed line Steps of process

  10. Expectation The elite improved Chinat 1 variety carries many brown plant hopper resistant genes which provide higher protection level to brown plant hopper better and more effective than the original one
