  3. Use commas to separate independent clauses when they are joined by any of these seven coordinating conjunctions: • And • But • For • Or • Nor • So • Yet

  4. Example • The game was over, but the crowd refused to leave.

  5. Use commas after introductory: • Phrases • Clauses • Or words that come before the main clause.

  6. Examples • While I was eating, the cat scratched at the door.

  7. Because her alarm clock was broken, she was late for class.

  8. Common introductory words that should be followed by a comma include: • Yes • However • Well Yes, I am going to the store.

  9. Commas set off items in a series. • I bought some eggs, milk, butter, and bread at the store.
