  3. The history of the Border Terrier One word to describe the Border Terrier is plucky. The Border Terrier is one of the oldest terrier breeds in the British Isles. Its roots go back to the 18th century. Some close relatives of the Border Terrier are : the Lakeland Terrier, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier and the Bedlington Terrier. Home

  4. Coquetdale Vic Coquetdale Vic was a game bitch who once went into a rocky hole, where after three days the huntsmen dug her out as the hole behind her closed. She was exhausted as she had killed 2 foxes and 4 cubs. She went on to win several awards for bravery. Home

  5. Home Choosing your Border Terrier When choosing your Border Terrier you need to think which one would suit your lifestyle. An inquisitive one with bright eyes and a wet nose are usually a good choice. DO NOT choose the one cowering in the corner just because you feel sorry for it as it will cause problems in the future .

  6. Preparing to bring home your Border Terrier When preparing to bring home your new pet you need to do a few things. These are the most important : Buy the correct size bed Ask the Breeder what food your pet is currently being fed on (any good breeder will give you a small amount of food) Buy a collar, lead Make sure you get an I.D tag Buy safe toys because if your dog has no toys it will destroy your furniture and shoes Home

  7. Exercise Border Terriers are very energetic animals. They need 20 minute (at least) every day. You must keep them on the lead near roads or animal fields as if the terrier sees a small creature or movement nothing will stop it running away. When at home if you are going to leave your dog for a long time you will need to play with it. You will need to play with it even if you are not going to leave it because long walks are not always possible. Home

  8. Hygiene grooming and washing You have to groom and wash your dog. You can also clean your dogs teeth to stop it getting bad breath. Some border Terriers are stripped which looks very smart. Home

  9. Quality time You need to spend time with your pet so it starts to feel part of the family. If you leave your dog for a long time beforehand you must play with it. Home

  10. Training and Socialising If your Border Terrier is easily distracted by other dogs it is not usually a good idea to take them to puppy training classes. However if you are struggling to teach your puppy to behave or you wish show your dog puppy training classes are good. You need your dog to socialise with other dogs to stop it becoming snappy. Home

  11. Breeding If you want to breed from your bitch first you must find a suitable dog. You can tell if your bitch likes the dog by if her tail arched and moves to one side. Meeting Dogs are sexually active all year round and are attracted to the scent of a bitch in season. Pregnancy A bitch goes through a two month pregnancy stage. Signs of pregnancy are an increase of appetite and weight. Home

Meeting Dogs are sexually active all year round and are attracted to the scent of a bitch in season. Mating The bitch stands firmly while the dog mounts her back and clasps her body with his forepaws. The dog will still remain attached to the bitch but tail to tail, this is called locking. When the bitch and the dog are locked no other dog is able to mate with the bitch. Pregnancy A bitch goes through a two month pregnancy stage. Signs of pregnancy are an increase of appetite
