Like many other airlines testing biofuels, Lufthansa aims to power its aircraft with energy derived from a sustainable source of plants or algae in combination with conventional airplane fuel. Lufthansa forecasts that by 2020, it will have cut carbon dioxide emissions by 25 percent from what they were in 2006, and it will have cut nitrogen oxide levels by 80 percent from their 2000 mark.
