  2. Childhood  • Born in Madison, Wisconsin, on May 23, 1908 • Attended University High School at Madison • Graduated from Madison Central High School in 1923 • Took a course for electrical engineering

  3. College  • Went to the University of Wisconsin • Graduated with B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1928 • Worked as graduate research assistant in electrical engineering • Introduced to quantum theory by Professor J.H. VanVleck

  4. First Job  • Worked with Professor Leo J. Peters • At the Gulf Research Laboratories in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania • He worked there for 3 years (1930-1933)

  5. After Resigning  • Worked in mathematical physics at Princeton University • Offered a position as Junior Fellow • At Society of Fellows at Harvard University • Worked with professors VanVleck and Bridgman

  6. John Bardeen  • 1959: Member of Center for Advanced Study • 1951: Professor of Electrical Engineering/Physics • 1957: Bardeen worked with Cooper and Schrieffer

  7. Achievements  • Developed first successful explanation of superconductivity • 1959-1962: Member U.S. President's Science Advisory Committee. • 1954: Elected to National Academy of Sciences

  8. Facts • 1956: Won the Nobel Prize for Physics • 1945: Joined Solid State research group • He’s a Fellow of the American Physical Society

  9. Random Facts • Worked at the University of Minnesota • Moved to New Jersey to join scientist group • Bardeen worked on experiments with Walter Brattain • Together they built the first point-contact transistor

  10. New Job • 1951: Bardeen looks for new job • Works on Superconductivity theory • Works at the University of Illinois

  11. 2 Nobel Prizes • Worked with Cooper and Schrieffer • Created the BCS theorem • Won another Nobel Prize for it • Only person ever to win 2 Nobel Prizes!!!!!
