  2. Definition/Symptoms • Psoriasis is a skin condition that causes red patches on the skin and irritation. Some symptoms include: Red patches with white scales in the middle (the patches can be itchy or raised) ------- Joint pain or aching (psoriasis arthritis) Severe dandruff on the scalp

  3. The causes: • There are 5 types of Psoriasis: • Erythrodermic -- The skin redness covers a large area. • Guttate – There are small, pink-red dots. • Inverse – Patches and irritation occur in the armpits, groin, and in between overlapping skin. • Plaque -- Thick, red patches of skin are covered by flaky, silver-white scales. (Most common type) • Pustular -- White blisters are surrounded by red, irritated skin. • Psoriasis is caused by a disorder in the immune system. The immune system produces an excessive amount of skin cells which produce the red patches. • “Triggers” that cause Psoriasis include: • Emotional Stress • Injury to the Skin • Reaction to drugs

  4. Guttate Erythrodermic Pustular Plaque

  5. Treatments: • For moderate or severe Psoriasis, typical treatment is Topical Treatment – medication applied to the skin. • The medication reduces excessive cell reproduction and inflammation. • Corticosteroids are the most common treatment. They, as well as Anthralin, are known as “anti-inflammatory agents. • They reduce swelling and redness. Phototherapy is also a type of treatment. The UV rays slow down the production of the skin cells and can improve some of the skin symptoms.
