  4. Key Words • Treaty of Versailles: peace agreement signed in 1919 that ended World War I – considered a failure because WWII was just 20 years later.

  5. I. Writing of the Treaty of Versailles: The three main powers who wrote the Treaty of Versailles were Great Britain, France, and the United States. The three central powers, Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire, were not allowed to negotiate. What each country wanted out of the treaty largely depended on how they were affected during the war. As we look at the following slides, make an inference about how each country would want to treat Germany after the war. Who would want to treat Germany harshly? Who would be more lenient with Germany?

  8. III. Major Requirements of the Treaty • 1.Germany had to admit guilt in causing World War I • 2.Germany and Austria lost territory, forming many new countries ( ex. of nationalism)

  9. III. Major Requirements of the Treaty • 3. Germany had to pay reparations • 4. Germany lost most of its military • 5. The League of Nations was created to attempt to resolve future disputes between countries, but was a failure.
